Hi All,
I have a very good friend which has suffers from serious drinking issues daily and he's not getting any better and needs help.
He has been into rehab before via the NHS which worked for some time, however he is now seriously depressed, put on allot of weight, possibly self harming and his family and friends are all worried.
Its a case that I need to get him in somewhere early week, however looking online for reviews etc isn't the easiest.
Has anyone got any recommendations, with the main issue being alcohol?
(I am not going down the NHS route and happy to go private)

Addiction treatment is not my field but i see many people with addictions of one kind or another and advise that you tread carefully. generally speaking, although it appears to be "business as usual", addiction services are no longer provided by the NHS. They are almost always subbed out to specialist service providers.
the private sector thrives on addictions and will always offer placements. however, this is not always satisfactory as the psychology of addiction is multi-factorial and requires investigation and assessment before sending to rehab; it is not always indicated and if income generation is your primary motivation then the thresholds and decision making processes with regard to offering service could be compromised. it would be very rare indeed for someone accessing public sector provision to be offered straight to rehab, not always the case in the private sector (although, clearly, the big names are well-respected and highly credible).
within the limitations of confidentiality etc, post up a general location and i'll see what i can find out in the context of who to approach in the first instance. keep in mind that service providers will be looking for a degree of motivation and commitment on the part of the "patient" and will be expecting a self-referral not a 2nd or 3rd party enquiry. i can enquire of my local specialist colleagues tomorrow and post back up when i get home

Many thanks for the above and very much appreciated.
To be honest location I am not to worried about, more the quality of the service being given.
My friend is based in West London, however would prefer something out of London so he is not around his surrounds etc.
I was out with him and our old group of friends last week and he really wants to address it, however he nor his family haven't got the money nor are the NHS being very responsive.
He will give it everything as he understands it's at a stage where he wont wake up and has a new arrival on the way in 7 months or so.
He is only 32 and a loyal friend, but I think its alcohol followed by depression etc so multiple avenues which are hand in hand with each other.
If you could let me know that would be great.
I have some numbers I will be calling in the morning and looking to book a placement tomorrow.

Clouds used to have a good reputation - link here - but there are lots of others offering private treatment. However, I don't think you will get far if he doesn't want the help ..... what local resources do you have?

Hi there.
Just thought I would drop a small note on this subject. I spent 6 weeks this last summer at the Clouds House for alcoholism. I found it very helpful with my addiction to alcohol. As a few people have mentioned you need to WANT to be there otherwise its a waste of time really. I was lucky and was a private patient. But the majority of other people there were funded by the charity themselves. My limited understanding was that you went for a sort of interview with them and they decide on funding. Some people had waited a long time some not so long. But again the people wanted to be there and wanted to help.
They also help you out with AA and any other help you may need after treatment.
Feel free to ask any questions you may have. I havent had a drink for 6 months now and I cant say its been easy at all.

West London ? - Priory group spring immediately to mind. Should be able to set up an assessment interview in Roehampton and then discuss treatment setting after that.
I think (but only think) that the SW London NHS mental health trust still offer in-house/NHS DAT - would be postcode/GP aligned though so maybe a non-starter.
If looking countrywide - Clouds i know and our local addiction tx service use them regularly so must be fit for purpose. A bit further, and also with a good rep, are Western Counselling in W-S-M offering residential tx, psycho-social programmes and also a follow up programme (I mention this as, quite frankly, stopping is easy. it's staying stopped that's hard)
if he's W London sort of close to Berks, then SMART in Slough have instant access for assessment. I know for sure that they wouldn't go direct to rehab as they would have to attempt community tx first(contractual requirement as it's still NHS money, merely controlled/allocated by them)
will post up a couple more possibilities tomorrow
