Looking to have a Series 2 re-built (actually my sister is to be precise). Any recommendations on an established, reputable and reliable firm to do this please? Any suggestions gratefully received. Thanks.

Suggest that you come over to the series2club.co.uk and tap into the wealth of local knowledge over there. There is a very active Thames Valley region.

What is the scope of the rebuild? A bit of welding and a few mechanical repairs to pass an MOT or a full nut and bolt job with new major components (chassis etc) and paint?

I have just completed a rebuild of a 1960 Series 2 and have spent many thousands of pounds and hundreds of hours on it. When I cast the net for someone to do some fabrication on the chassis and bulkhead I was contacted by a reputable company with good credentials who offered to take mine on and quoted £40/hr. It probably would have cost upwards of £30K for me to have handed the whole rebuild over to them.

I wanted to do the rebuild myself and found a very skilled local fabricator and paid £125/day for just over 2 weeks work on the chassis and bulkhead:

Even with countless hours work by me the vehicle is worth little more than it has cost. This is not why I did it though, but more to highlight that a third-party rebuild is likely to cost more than the value of the vehicle. Not necessarily an issue if it has sentimental value or your sister intends to keep it for a long time as values are rising now that the market for Series 1s is established.

Once completed, I had a professional valuation done for insurance and there is one interesting statement in the summary; "There is a common misconception that Land Rovers are cheap and easy to restore and this is simply not the case. A front axle rebuild alone is likely to cost £1,000 without work to the diff". I spent in excess of £750 on parts alone to rebuild both axles.
