I want to get a new commuting car, and have decided with the mileage it will do that I can't really be bothered with another diesel so am thinking about a Clk 230/320 or 240/320 newer shape one, sort of would like a convertible for a change and they're good value at this time of year, I also was considering an Slk 230 too.
Which do you think would be the best to go for?, and is there anything specific to look out for on the convertible Clk or Slk?, are the roofs quite reliable or prone to failure?. Does the Slk suffer from the roof control box getting wet like in the SLs?.
I've had a Clk 230 coupe before, and know the main thing on Mercs of this era are rust, any advice appreciated.
Budget is around £2k.

SLK - central locking - under the rear window - pretty common - cheaper to replace the seal if in doubt before the unit gets fried. Don't ask me how I know.

I can't help you with your specific questions but if you're after general information then I run a 208 320 (coupe) and was interested in the mpg as it seemed to be better than I was thinking. I did a proper brim to brim test and found I was getting 32.5 mpg. Mix of driving.

Don't bother with the 230, the 320 is your best bet.

I have a 208 320 cab and can confirm the above, they are surprisingly good on fuel.

I'd go for the W209 as rust won't be an issue go for the 240/320 the kompressor engine is far from Mercedes best work.

The latest Mercedes Enthusiast magazine - out today - has a C208 coupe buyers guide article - not had chance to read it yet.

209 cab roof dead reliable....unless you kink (and thus hole) a hydraulic pipe...as mine managed to do...£500 to fix via Cayman hoods in Dorking. But they do wear at the crease points....so make sure it's in good condition. 209s don't rust but interior trim can easily be scratched.
