Flashgun for my EOS 10D?
Discussion
Ok so the time has come for me to get a flashgun for my EOS 10D camera, my feeling is that Canon ones will work better with this - anybody got any experience / comments?
I'm currently looking towards the 580EX SPEEDLITE but am wondering what the real difference is between this and the 550 or 420 models?

I've got a 420. It was a lot cheaper than the others (about half the price IIRC) and is still a lot of flash (more than I'm capable of using at the minute).
I spent some time looking at the specs and seem to remember the key difference with the 550 being something to do with its master/slave capabilities.
The 580 may be a lot different, but I didn't see the 550 as being worth the extra moolah.

It depends what you want to do with it - I've got both the 420 and 580, and the 420 is perfectly fine unless you need any of the additional functions that the 580 offers. It does have master/slave capability (in which case you'll need an extra flash like a 420 anyway to act as the slave), and it's also a bit more powerful and faster to recharge.
It also transmits colour temperature info to optimise white balance on the camera, and it adjusts the flash coverage if you have a smaller digital sensor to optimise flash coverage and reduce the amount of power used per shot.
There's no reason you can't get the 420 now, and when you've got to grips with it, get something like the 580 in addition at some stage in the future.

Martin,
How much cheaper is camera gear in Gib, its only a 30 minute drive from our place out there, never really considered going there before ( mainly because it looks a right dump....... ).

Ross,
It's no so bad
I paid £899 for my D20 a couple(few?) months ago and the cheapest anywhere on line is 7day shop at £920.( It was more at the time)
Martin.
Brought initially a 420EX for my 10D and then decided to upgrade to a 550EX.
From a flash perspective there really isn't much difference in their abilities with my limited undertsanding of flash work.
Advantages of 550 over 440 as I see is the display on the back, ability to manual focus (if that is useful) and flash comprensation. Also the flash is thrown out further however I seam to encounter over exposure issues in some situations.
Disadvantages - The 550 is noticeably larger physically which makes you look too much like a pro / poser. It all adds to the weight and overall size of the camera you are carrying.
If on a budget I would stick to a 420. If money no object I would have in hindsight jumped to a 580..
