Pensioner incensed after being charged 50p for a glass of tap water in a Runcorn pub

http://www.runcornandwidnesworld.co.uk/news/142003...

In short he's been going that pub for 12 years to watch the match, during which time he has only ever drank tap water for free. Landlady finally has enough and charges him 50 pence. He gets so incensed that he informs the local press.

Local news is fantastic sometimes.

It's an outrage I tell you!banghead

Unusual to see an honest comment coming from the landlady; usually comments from the business owner are all bluster and PC claptrap making out that there has been a miscommunication or a misunderstanding; nope she hopes he "never darkens his door again", love it. He sounds like a right free loader.

I thought it was illegal to charge for tap water? However I think she has a point, he must have really gone the extra mile and treated her pub like his front lounge her to have that reaction!

An establishment can charge for the rental of the glass or something like that. There is a fantastic Chinese near us that will charge £1 for a glass of water if no one is buying alcohol.

The charge was not for the tap water, but for the use of the glass.

He is so outraged that he's going to take his own glass in with him next time.

There's always a way round it. My Mate is as tight as a ducks arse and whenever its his round he has water so that place would knacker him I wish it was near.

It's fair game to charge for the use of a glass (or for service).

sounds fair to me if he was free loading for the football on tv , maybe if youre spending £20 each on food then its not so bad to ask for a free water

God, I bet he is a laugh a minute.

Fair enough, it isnt a charity, if everyone restricted their drinking to tap water there wouldnt be a pub to drink in, businesses need to be fair but so do customers, our local car spares shop charges more than say Halfords or getting something off Ebay but I pay for the advice, him being there and usually have a good car related gab as well, cost and value get mixed up sometimes.

A pub regular is someone who drinks in the pub every day? What planet is she on?

I guess a regular isn't someone who turns up only when there is a game on, and sits drinking free water.

At my local they do a quiz on a Wednesday where it's a fiver each to enter, all the money goes into the prize pot and you get a curry each. Not a bad deal at all, but then a couple of groups started turning up, paid to enter and then just drank tap water all night. Also, as they were sober, it helped them do well in the quiz and they quite often won. After a while, a sign appeared on the bar that there was going to be a charge for tap water (or the glass) if people weren't going to buy drinks.
