Sat Nav Question?

Does anybody know how easy it is to fit a sat nav.
I currently have a 996 C4 1999 s reg, but do not have the option but would like it and would like to go for the factory fitted one rather than an aftermarket one.
There is a porsche one available (Car was totalled) and the bits are available but I just wondered if it was worth the hassle???

I don't believe that its easy to retro-fit the full PCM system. In fact I had a 2000MY 996 cabrio and Porsche told me they could not fit the PCM screen. What I did have fitted though was the Becker radio sat nav, which still covered the whole of Europe and was DVD based but fitted in the standard space vacated by the CDR23 head unit. The only thing it lacked was the map facility and guidance was by way of voice and arrow commands.
Personally I wouldn't buy a new car without satnav these days but its just something you get used to. All my cars since then have had it and they get better every time. If I had a car now without sat nav for some reason you're probably better off buying a standalone unit like a TomTom or NavMan unit which you can take from one car to another without playing with the internal electronics of the car.

As far as I know PCM1 can be retro-fitted, but there are many reasons you wouldn't want to:
1)Its a very difficult job - so expensive in labour
2)The system is no longer supported by Porsche - updated maps have not been able for some time.
3)There are a lot better and much cheaper options available.
So unless you absolutely HAVE to have the factory look, then I'd forget it.
For any car equipped with the MOST bus (i.e. MY2003 onwards, including 997) the PCM2 unit can be retro-fitted, and DIY instructions are available on renntech.org - I know someone who has done this and it worked very well.
