Got a ticket through the Swiss Hire Company, £80 including their admin fee

97Km/hr in a 90Km/hr zone!

Exceeding the limit is exeeding the limit etc, but by just 4.4mph, we maybe don't have it so bad here after all!

Not at all tolerant, the limit is the limit there I am afraid with no allowance for error.

Everyone if you go through a camera.

If you get stopped, it depends on your level of French.

If you are stopped then you pay. The same goes for a hire car. If it is a UK, Danish or Irish reg and you are caught on camera, then nothing will happen yet but the law changes at some point this year. (September I think)

Think that's bad? My friend got a ticket in Switzerland for 1km/h over. Posted their version of a NIP in another thread somewhere...

Trust me, it varies - at least it has in my experience. Rural Savoie.

Well they are a little funny in the Sovie. It's the French version of Norfolk but with hills and more inbreeding hehe

It's lovely, they speak slowly enough for me to understand them.

They have fondue and the Savoyarde cuisine is some of the best in France IMO. I still can only understand every 10th word though! lick

Still back to tickets. I'm still waiting on on from the summer that I set off. I did not realise that they are slowly replacing the old grey boxes with newer one mounted on poles which are harder to spot.

If you check your letter you will see that it is your recorded speed minus 10kph.
My last one was for 93 so it's not as strict as you think it is

The cameras can be quite well hidden too! At least British cars can't get caught by the cameras (yet... Though I think it is coming)

They do have a more reasonable speed limit on the Autoroute's though!

Unless something has changed, French regulation for cameras used to be that there must be a sign warning you of the camera within a certain distance. Also, regulation used to be that if there's a sign then there must be a camera - none of the warning signs we have in the UK for cameras that don't exist.

In light of these recent changes (I'm not by any means advocating that you do) what happens if you don't pay it and ignore it?

I hated the way that they got more zealous and added more technology year on year. The only thing that made life bearable was using a Coyote, but even that is no protection against the well hidden traps or the ones dissimulated into moving vehicles.

The French administration had one redeeming feature - they openly stated that it wasn't just about road safety and that revenue raising was an objective.

The changes will be implemented in May 2017.

I set off plenty of fixed cameras in the year I lived there with my UK plated car and never received anything. I was once caught doing 110MPH on the autoroute by some gendarmes in a Megan RS - they drove me to the cashpoint and took €90 off me. It was quite refreshing actually - there was no lecture on how incredibly dangerous it was to be doing it on a dry, empty 5 lane motorway, simply "this is the limit, this was your speed, €90 please". All seemed pretty fair to me.

It says
Votre vehicule a ete controle a : 97km/h
Pour un vitesse limite autorisee de: 90km/h
La Vitesse retenue est de : 92Km/h

Which Babel told me

Your vehicle has been control: 97 km/h For a maximum permitted speed of: 90 km/h The selected speed is: 92 Km/h

I was confused as to what the 92km/h lines was - did wonder if it meant they would fine above 92km/h
I can't see any reference to a 10km/h tollerance, I'm wondering now if it would be
"your speed minus 5km/h(?) is still above the limit so we're having some money"

I thought they'd done away with that as they need to catch more people to raise money.
