The twonks at the BMW dealer said, and I quote, "We've got some great insurance products that should be [insert words that removed my concerns about the insurance on such a complicated car].

The official BMW Insurance insisted on the car being garaged overnight in a suitable locked garage. Plus a tracker and the usual stuff.

Who actually garages their car everynight?

If you've got a garage surely it's common sense to put your car in it? What's in your garage that's so valuable you'd rather leave a £100k car parked outside?

I'm sure a friend has his i8 through BMW insurance (Allianz) and they were happy with the street in Central London (car arrived last Easter so maybe they've changed....)

Modern houses may have garages, but once you've put the car in I doubt you'll be able to open the door. It's only really doable on a double, because you'll probably need one side to keep things like bins!

When I last had a play around with an insurance comparison site, it was about £1 more expensive to say you garaged your car than left it on the drive. Presumably because idiots have been claiming for damage after trying to squeeze their car into a single garage.

Just to balance this out, not me....

.. or swmbo.

Garage is at the back of the garden and will always be a tight squeeze.

I know a guy that has an i8 and parks it overnight on a busy main road. He's had it there a year and has had no trouble at all.

If you want balance, my wife has never, nor will she ever, park her car in the garage - it's not something her family does (apart from the tractors and quad bikes) and she cannot see any need or purpose in doing it

I used to think the same but I'm in a new build house and the car fits in no problem. Padded section on the wall of course to protect the door when getting out.

Keep it in the garage as another poster has already said to protect it from errant footballs, cricket balls, frisbees and anything else the neighbour kids can thoughtlessly propell at my car.

That and it doesn't need defrosting on mornings like today.

I have a shed for the things most keep in their garages and as for st, that goes in the bin. I'm not wasting valuable real estate on st just to leave my pride and joy on the drive.

I garage the saxo and leave the M5 on the drive, no joke.

Actually though it's cheaper to insure the M5 if it's parked outside, I would garage it, but I'd have to chop it up with an angle grinder to get it to fit.

I can get my MX-5 in the garage OK, but regular cars are so fat these days with all the side impact protection that it's a bit impractical. Like so many parking spaces, garages seem to be based off the dimensions of some 1950s runabout.

I also have a bit of carpet fixed to the wall to protect the car door. If nothing else, keeping the car in there forces me to keep the garage in some sort of order.

When I was a student in Bristol, our garage was broken into. It was a standard metal door and they pulled up the bottom and bent it upwards and outwards at the side locks. How no one heard this racket I don't know. I didn't have anything in there, but a couple of my house mates had their bikes nicked.

^^^ this. And the i8 is six and a half feet wide with gull-wing doors so I need a wide (prob double) and high garage just to fit it in. Besides, my garage is full of stuff that I really can't leave outside all year round... tools, camping stuff and a Ducati.
