Ideally I would like to get the Mk7 with PP and DCC but not many around and all in the mid 20k range. My max budget is 16k so I am not sure whether I should get a late Mk6 now or wait another year till the MK7s have come down to between 15 and 20k

thoughts and suggestions appreciated.

Thanks in advance.

I can't help much with the MK7 Golf GTi, however I do own a 2010 MK6 Golf GTi which I've had for more or less two years now. My MK6 is now out of warranty and I have played with it a little bit and it will soon be pushing around 275 bhp and 300 ft-lb torque. Maybe you don't want to modify/upgrade the car but with a simple and reliable remap and other upgrades these can give quite good results and for me it has made the MK6 GTi what it should have been.

I was seriously thinking if getting rid of mine to buy a MK7 Golf R, but the wife changed her car recently to a new Audi S3 convertible so I decided to keep my MK6 and play with it and to be honest I'm glad I did as what I've done has transformed the GTi. As for the car itself, it is very good if a little dated on the interior side of things (i.e. the dash board) compared to the MK7 GTi or my wife's S3, I believe the later run out MK6's had more things included as standard i.e. Bluetooth, leather and heated seats, a better stereo and a few other minor things.

I haven't driven a MK7 GTi but have driven a MK7 R which although is a very capable car was just a little dull to drive purely because it's so good at what it does.

The MK7's will be cheaper in a year or so's time but for me I'll be missing this incarnation of the Golf and wait to see what the MK8 brings. I've owned every other Golf GTi from the MK1 GTi through to the MK6 GTi and won't be buying a MK7.

Good luck with your search.

Hi Andy,

Thanks a lot for the detail. What concerns me about the Mk6 is the known timing tensioner issue (http://www.golfgtiforum.co.uk/index.php?topic=262793.0) which seems to plagued a number of Mk6 GTIs and in a lot of cases, has resulted in a new engine. Have you experienced such a problem?

Wait for a Mk7 to come along.

I went from a Mk6 to a 7 it's a bigger step up than you would think especially in the standard equipment fitted.

I was wanting the PP fitted but a car came along without it at a deal I couldn't refuse, I've now driven both and to be honest didn't notice a difference in the performance but the brakes were better. I didn't notice the trick diff as I don't drive like a loon.

Hi Patch,

Thanks for the update. Does your car have the dynamic chassis control? How has the car dealt with uneven/bad road surfaces.

I had a Mk6 Ed35. I found the throttle response, brakes and steering to be disappointing (too slow, too sharp and too numb respectively). I understand all these are better on the Mk7 although I haven't yet had the chance to take a test drive. But these were the factors that runined the Mk6 for me.

Assuming these are all now sorted (or at least improved) I'd hold out for the Mk7.

No it doesn't, my car is a 2014 poverty spec other than the paint but it has everything I need(the newer models even more)

The car deals with the road pretty well I think firm but perfectly acceptable, I'm seen a few comments from people with DCC saying that they wouldn't bother speccing it again but I suppose it all about what you want.

The good thing about getting a used one is hopefully the standard Bridgestone tyres have been changed as they are pretty crap mines will be going in the spring.

is the DCC really worth it?

Definitely go for the Mk7, it's a big step up from the Mk6 whereas the jump from Mk5 to Mk6 was a lot smaller.

DCC isn't essential by any means, they drive nicely just on the standard setup with 18s.

If you can live without both DCC and PP this is available today for £15k - http://www4.autotrader.co.uk/classified/advert/201...

Highish miles but represents a lot of car for the money IMO

I've not driven a mk6 but I do own a mk7 and it's a fantastic machine.

DCC isn't essential but it does make a difference, mine is in comfort 90% of the time and it just feels like any other normal car, when switched to sport it really feels more purposeful. Comfort is softer than a none DCC GTI and sport is stiffer than a none DCC.
