A friend of mine has a one and half year old son, and is seriously considering taking him to have professional painting classes.
He asked my opinion, to which my initial reactions was that it was a ludicrous idea.
I'm finding it hard to get my head around why a toddler that can barely hold a pen would need to take such lessons.

Isn't giving him a pen and paper and letting them draw pictures what he should be doing, or am I living in the stone ages!?

What benefits would a child his age get by taking these types of courses?

Painting classes?

FFS, this is 2016. That kid needs to be learning Photoshop or CGI.

No, it's van gogh style paint classes.

I'm glad I'm not the only one that thinks it's ridiculous. I'll let him have a read of this thread before its too late, and his son decides to chop his ear off.

Oh dear. I would hope this is a joke but suspect not. Don't tell me, the parents are veggies, dad has a beard and a "sleeve" of tats. Mother does Yoga...

Mozart wrote his first Concerto at 4.

That said, your friend obviously has issues.

Speaking as someone who did an Art PGCE years ago. He's far better cultivating a vivid imagination and exposing him/her to a broad spectrum of cultural references than he is teaching him art techniques.

If you can hold a pen / pencil / brush you can teach any idiot to paint or draw. What is almsot impossible to teach is imagination.

Give him a slap from me too. Tell him to do water babies instead; it'll be more fun for all and a far more useful skill to learn at <2 years old.

That costs a bomb too! £175 round our way for 10 half hour sessions. There's a similar thing run by the council, £39 for the same time.

My Grandson is just starting piano lessons, he is also learning Spanish alongside his English. Two half year old seems to be enjoying it, never to young to learn imo.

Water babies is just a vehicle to sell grandparents overpriced photos of babies underwater

As for art lessons, wtf? At that age it's just about learning to make marks on paper..
