Broken (sort of) thumb

Just looking for advice/experiences on a broken thumb. Currently in plaster for 2 weeks pending a visit to the hand clinic for review
Saw x-ray on Sunday and there is a small sliver of bone sticking out sideways at the base of the thumb (MCP joint?). Afraid I can't remember what type of fracture he said it was but he did mention that surgery or a repot may be necessary
Does anybody have any experience or thoughts on what I might be looking at?
It's my left thumb and I am left handed. Also means I am having to work from home as I can't drive (well I can but am refusing to give the insurance company chance to revoke insurance should I have an accident)
Any help/advice gratefully received. Made it to 41 (on Saturday) and never had a pot before. Not bad for a rugby player I suppose
