Just a quick query. Taking my old landlord to court- and had a letter from small claims court advising me that he has until the 31st Jan to basically respond. If he doesn't do I win or what? And what would I do next?

Then you can make an application for judgment in default. You should have received a letter from the Court which had this listed on it..
