Hi Guys,

In the interests of ensuring that mine never gets back on the road ever again bykeeping her in a permanent state of being worked on I was again wondering about replacing the Ford coil packs (that are currently mounted on a cantilevered bracket poking out from the front of the engine) with the Range Rover type coil packs that mount on a frame behind the plenum and sit under the lower windscreen trim.

My only real thinking for this (if thinking is ever something that I really do) is simply to tidy up the engine bay a bit and, as it looks like I'm going to be making up new plug leads at some point soon(ish), this seems like an appropriate time to do it if I'm going to do so.

So - good idea or bad idea? All opinions welcome...

You will almost certainly have to have the ECU coil Dwell/soak times altered though Phil, but I see no downsides but a neater motor.

That's a piece of p*ss though as long as I can find out what to change them to ... I'll need to change the connector on the ECU harness to suit but that should be easy enough to find.

Trying to free up that "front of house" area to allow for the possibility of a little forced induction further down the line. smile

Must admitt i`ve never seen anything like this within my ecu settings. Simon !

Aren't they right in line to catch rainwater just there on a chimp?

They are Gary, but providing the leads fit correctly it's not an issue I know Peters never had any issues, Phil I would speak to Lloyds/Canems don't assume swapping coils will be OK without comparing specs they may be comparable but don't bank on it, and best your damage the coils at worst you'll blow the internal ECU spark drivers

Always thought that too, hence my decision.

The dwell time and voltage compensation is easily settable from the CANEMS config software so no worries there... smile

It's basically setting the amount of time that you need to energise the coil pack for it to build up enough voltage to then spark properly when required ... if you set it too long then it cooks the coil and there's also (IIRC) a voltage compensation too so that if it takes 6mS to accumulate charge at 12v it might only take 5.4mS at 14.4v...

I considered the P38 coils to replace my Ford ones but wasn't keen on the idea of rain and needing separate spark drivers. So I'm trying to use some VW ones. I just need to finish the wiring loom and ask my mate to weld the mounting brackets on.

Yes but due to the design they are quite watertight.

Even though I avoid the rain the car has been in rain many times and of course plenty of hose downs!

Maybe i should fit a length of gutter there with a RWP discharging below!

Only downside I can see, is that the coil packs are located right under the grill at the bottom of the windscreen, when it rains, the coil packs are in a prime location for a soaking each time

Shouldn't be an issue even though far from ideal this is with the Ford coils pack but you get the gist https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6YeMG2PHb6I
