I've been really disappointed with the games so far on next gen consoles. OK it was the same last gen at first and I have seen things improving but not fast enough.

Recently I have found myself going back to old games on the x360 and really enjoying them. BF3, ruder/more adult and with maps that blow away bf4. All the bad companies, currently enjoying Deus X and just replayed through the Modern Warfare games. There seems to be a real glut in single player story mode at the minute with a big push to co-op or online only, a real shame.

anyone else going back old school and enjoying it?

As the consoles have moved on, my screen sizes have increased massively. So I'm always looking for the newest, highest res / refresh game to play on these massive screens.

My mate isn't really that arsed about such things. So sticks with his 32" telly. Sometimes I'd go around his and think 'these look and play just as good (if not better) than the st I've been messing about with'. BF3 on a 32" looks just as impressive as BF4 on a projector with a 6ft screen.

The PC is slightly different, but comes with its own headaches.

And once you're 'over' the sheer scale of a projector, or even a 50", and are able to adjust back to a smaller screen, there's really no extra enjoyment to be had from a massive viewing area.

I feel like the nihilist of video games fun.

Interesting point on the graphics front. Certainly Modern Warfare is certainly dated but love the story, BF3 however looks good enough. I was playing both 360 and One in a cinema room. There the screen is 3m x 2m so you can certainly see the difference in look but the new games aer still disappointing.

Many say they don't play the story but I do, I love story modes. BF3 had a great story mode and whilst BF4's was fun, it certainly wasn't long enough.

The other thing too is that I find on BF4 the larger maps = good but the 64 players = bad, I stil prefer playing with a mix of about 24 to 30 players as its much more tactical. Likewise the epic Far Cry (which I love to play over and over), FC3 was a stunning game with a great scale, it seems with FC4 it was the same story (even sounded like the same characters) but the scale of the map was simply too big.

Thething that is certainly true of both systems but much more the next gen, games are not launch ready when launched to the point I do not buy launch titles any more.

MGS5, Witcher 3 and Fallout 4 were epic single player games.

I've gone back further back than that and dug out my PS2, had a quick go on Gran Turismo 4, Grand Theft Auto San Andreas and Timesplitters, really really enjoying all 3, it was nice playing games that were actually finished before release and not patched constantly.
Ok visually they are terrible compared to the current gen, but they are so much fun, especially San Andreas, I can see myself losing a lot of time to that.

There must have been many disappointed kids at Xmas opening new games and new consoles to find you can't play before connecting to the web and downloading some half baked patch over 8 hours. Massive backward step. The big sell of consoles over computers in the 80's was NO wait time. Load cartridge and play. These prolonged downloads shouldn't be accepted especially when game and console are box fresh.

I have a PS 2, 3 and 4 set up, I play the 3 the most but the 2 gets used a lot for Crash team racing and the Tomb raider series for PS1 and 2.

The 4 has been on once since Christmas but I will use it more when some more titles I am interested in come out.

I've just activated a Playstation Now trial. It's free for a week so thought it would rude not to and gives you access to 150 games from the ps3 back catalogue. It's a streaming service so heavily dependent on a decent broadband connection but as long as you have that, it's good to go. I haven't played any next gen games on my PS4 for a week.

What console do you have? I downloaded it on my PS3 from the Network for about 3-4 quid

We have just purchased a XBOX One and I have to say I'm quite disappointed with both the console and games. In fact the 360 is still plugged in and has probably been used more than the One in the last week.

The Xbox One operating system is shocking, logging in and out of multiple profiles for each user, launching different apps for each menu. I just want to turn it on and play the games. Even the boot-up time is poor!

If it had been purchased locally then it would be going back to the shop.

I can't even work out how to use my xbox one menu to be honest.

Its a total pain in the arse and I am a techie for a living.

I got a PS4 for Christmas ( I was put on the spot and it was the first thing that went through my mind I wouldn't mind).

My core game tastes on consoles are

Gran Turismo
GTA
Resident Evil
Tekken
Wipeout (although I may be getting too old for wipeout).

My Current games Haul

MGS V - Good game, I think I am just about to meet Quiet (I need mind bleach for the angry Joe review, funny though)
Uncharted collection - Bloody Fantastic. If you haven't played Uncharted and played a bit of tomb raider back in the day, do it!
Last Of us - Played an hour or so. Impressed so far.
Rocket League - Class in a glass. I suck, but its a cracking game.
ZOmbi - So far Meh!
Fifa 16 - Nice to play with my 8 year old. No interest otherwise.
Minecraft - Like crack cocaine for the kids.

I have to admit I feel a similar sense of emperors new clothes about 'next gen'. Although apart from battery life, I really, really like the DS4. by far the best controller I have used.

I think I would have been best buying a 30" monitor for my gaming PC.

Might have to set my steam link up tonight.

Well I just completed Bad Company 2, by far and away my favourite of the BF franchise. They said they wont make another as they don't know how to quantify what it is that people love so much about BC over BF. Here is the deal, the story is epic, simply one of the best stories out there. Then there is the multiplayer which has, to my mind, the best MP maps for any of the BF games. Also the graphics, they just seem to have a more realistic feel about them, the choppers react with nice level of weight and inertia, I have been having some great fun playing MP even if with only a few players as the game seems mostly forgotten.... oh and then there is Vietnam mode!

I've also spent the last day playing Grid Racer which is exactly the type of racer I enjoy. Forza and horizon are either too serious are too meh to be fun, Grid from 2007 has graphics that today look brilliant, plays great, just good simple fun.

Agree BF BC2 was the peak for Battlefield for me and similarly Modern Warfare was the peak for CoD. Both franchises have gone downhill since and the FPS genre in general has stagnated or worse, gone backwards which is where I tend to spend most of my console time. In fact the lack of decent next gen games got so bad that I've gone back to PC gaming to mix things up a bit.

The PS3\360 gen was far superior in terms of game content to the current gen IMO.

Have to agree the 360 one is far superior. Tech specs aside I do prefer the One's controller, noise levels and app functionality though. Still plenty of great 360 games that are very cheap now (although the DLC is normally more than the actual disc)

To an extent we're probably seeing the law of diminishing returns when it comes to graphics. When you look at the launch games for the 360, PS2, PS1 or SNES they made the previous generation look instantly obsolete. But whilst the One and PS4 certainly look better it still doesn't seem like such a massive leap

It was similar at launch of 360/ps3 though as it took a while for the transfer to new gen, I reckon 3 years or so will be that point as the 360s are still selling well. It is a shame they "cannot put their finger on" what made BC series so good, its obvious to anyone that plays - they just feel so good to play and the look/feel is much more believable than now. Last night I was flying around the map "heavy metal" and the colours were beautiful, and this was on a 8 year old game on the old engine.

I would love to see a reboot for the XB1, but as with the old BF3 maps that put into BF4 they will somehow ruin it. Looking forward to getting back onto BF3 soon
