... which was a surprise to me as I had looked into Factory delivery and figured it would be built in Stuttgart. .

There is an interesting article from autoblog saying all Boxster/Cayman production is coming back into Zuffenhausen eventually, but that for now production takes place at either Stuttgart or the Karmann factory in Osnabrück.

http://www.autoblog.com/2015/07/17/porsche-boxster...

Anyway, in my head, it made sense for the GT4 to take up space on the Zuffenhausen line as it contains a 911 engine and GT3 parts, so logistically could/should be made beside them.

However, I have found out that all GT4 production is in Karmann, where it is built alongside the VW Golf. They are banging out about 20/week according to a post by a factory worker on another forum. I wonder if this has anything to do with the paint defects seen in a lot of PTS cars?

Hey, at least it's made in Germany...

Here is the pic he posted of cars leaving the factory.

I will correct my original post and say that he claims 20/day, not 20/week. (That sounds a bit high for me...)

This is however on the word of a facebook group member who claims he works in the factory where they are built. Not doubting him of course, but you know...

Yes I found this out last year when on a visit to Zuffenhausen. All Caymans are made at Osnabruck (VW) as well as some boxsters. Some boxsters are made at Zuffenhausen purely to keep the production line moving at a steady pace - I think its been at its capacity of 200 cars a day now for quite a while. I think there is going to be a decent expansion in Stuttgart soon to bring all sports cars back there with just Panamera/Macan/cayenne left at Leipzig. Does seem strange logistically as I am not 100% but I think ALL Porsche engines icluding the SUV's are built at Zuffenhausen too. For anyone that hasn't done it a visit is well worth it. Going to incorporate it on another road trip this April and have a drive up to Weisssach too just to see whats there - although getting in is near impossible I am told.

Fair enough - but I don't see anything in what he says that suggests he is masquerading as something he isn't.

So not just 911/Cayman/boxster engines.

Great video that .

Having been round the factory in April, they are built at Osnabruck on the same line as the cooking models. They told us 15 a day at that time.

Also was told Cayenne and Panamera final assembly (made in Bratislava with interior fitted in Leipzig) to be moved to Osnabruck to make room for Macan expansion in Leipzig. Boxster and Cayman to Stuttgart.

Fair points.

On the question of the number per day (20) this factory worker claims - that feels a little high to me. Does anybody have a worldwide production number source?

When we were at the factory it ran on 4 minute units of work with a break every 30 minutes or so on 2 shifts. So 20 day doesn't sound like a lot.

20 per day is probably spot on.

Assuming with weekends and holidays / factory breaks etc about 240 working days per year?

20 per day and year production run would put the number around 4800 world wide, allowing for press cars etc probably looking at about 5000 world wide in total at those rates so sounds plausable!

Given the production run is more or less 12months and there are 260 worrking days in a year, 20 a day equates to 5200 cars worldwide which sounds rather a lot.

Agree but in line with the comments of the development person in the early Evo video... I'm happy I secured a PTS car early on. smile

Who cares where the car is built so long as it works?

People are going to laugh at you "buying a tarted up VW just for the badge" whichever Porsche you own. Comes with the territory. The difference is that we are driving brilliant modern sportscars and they - - - - aren't.
