I've got a 4.2 engine that I need rebuilding. I should clarify that this is the old XK type straight six.

My first thought was VSE and I intend to give them a call on Monday.

Meanwhile has anyone an idea of VSE prices and/or experience with their engines ?

Also can anyone recommend any other engine builder along with prices ?

I think this tends to be a "how long is a piece of string?" question.

What do you want to do with the engine, do you need it supe'd up, torque or power etc.

Your old friends at CMC build engines, but the last time I spoke to them they were also sup-contracting out some of their work to VSE, as I recall they offered a 4.2 engine complete on their website which was built for them by VSE to CMC's spec, they also offered the option of having them do the work at a somewhat higher price.
Other than that, I mostly deal with Winspeed and Chris Window there has built engines for a few people here on the forum. He didn't build mine but has done quite a bit of work on it over the years. My engine was build by Eike Wellhausen (CHATSWORTH MOTOR SPARES LIMITED, Chesterfield) but it definitely wasn't intended to be a road engine.

Peter Lamder at Sigma Engineering
Tester Engineering at Daventry

There was a thread here a couple of months ago where someone was after buying a complete Jaguar XK engine.

I'm looking for some comparative costs for a standard engine rebuild.

I can then adjust for any upgrades accordingly.

Hi Mike,

get some costs from other companies mentioned and then give me a bell. I'm building a 4.2 E type at the moment.

I'm just a wee bit miffed you didn't contact me about this. cry

Thanks for that. I'll give you a call once I get some more info. So far I only know that it's burning a lot of oil and hasn't been well maintained.

I'm certain it will need a rebuild and I'll take the opportunity of upgrading at the same time.

Getting the car sometime next week. It's a Kougar by the way.

We had 2 4.2 E type engines built by CMES at Bracknell. On one VSE engine we had built, the oil pump rotor cracked in two.

Rob Beere Racing, Coventry, knows these things inside and out.

These are a year or two old, but not much has changed. A rebuilt engine for my E-type, including stitching the block, new liners, a brand new cylinder head machined, was just over £6,000. I've done 2,500 miles since, no oil leak and no oil consumption. In fact, when we changed the oil at 1,500 it was till golden.

Sorry to hijack , but I see on the scanned documents of 'Lowdrag' that VSE was able to supply the cast alloy cam cover breathers as per originally fitted to the Jaguar C type .

I am currently building up the engine for my Suffolk C type replica and am looking for these .

In the scanned files It refers to the price list for pricing .
@ Lowdrag : can you have a look at the price list what cost it was ?

Additionally : do you have an email contact of VSE ? I know they are closed , but maybe he is still able to source me a set as I have been trying to get hold of these for ages ...

Much appreciated ,

Harald

Sorry, but the documentation and price lists I have don't help. You can try vsekemp@btconnect.com. However, if they can no longer supply I am pretty sure that CKL Developments will be able to help since they specialise in race engines.

ckl@ckl.co.uk

Best of luck.
