I finally managed to put together a system to plug my phone into the car as a semi permanent installation. So this is a spare Sony Xperia S installed on the roll bar cover. My car has a sunroof which is the panel and rocker switch in front and the dashcam is visible just above the left edge of the mirror.

The wiring setup looks like this

The difficult bit is getting the phone into 'dock mode' to allow it to host the USB port to the ECU whilst at the same time charging from the same port. For the Sony this is rather difficult as although it is supposed to be selectable from a resistor in the plug but I was unable to get this to work (and I tried lots of ways). It is also not possible to do this via a hub (which I also tried several ways). The eventual solution was an off the shelf OTG y-cable this is available from Valarm here http://shop.valarm.net/products/micro-usb-host-otg...
This is the only brand I got to work and I tried several.

The final two bits are a standard charger y-cable to allow me to take the power form an existing supply that I have for the dashcam and I put together a low profile Dsub connector to go into the ECU. I had to shorten the solder pins to about 1mm above the insulator to make this low enough.

Some bits I bit I forgot to say. The phone mount is the spring clip off a small clipboard (£1 for Tesco) glued to the back of the phone holder. The clip nicely grips the roll bar cover and shouldn't leave a mark. All the wiring tucks up neatly out of sight inside the roll bar cover even the USB serial box fits easily.

Very nice. There is certainly a lot more meat to the rollbar on the earlier cars. Not sure there is enough space to fit anything above the screen on mine. Interesting that you managed to get it to charge using the valarm cable, might get one of those for my nexus 7 smile

Nice one Ian. Looks great. I like the low profile d type connector. I was thinking of having to cut a hole in the ally ECU cover but couldn't bring myself to do it!

You have a sunroof?!!! Amazing! Where is mine?

I still have loads of these if anyone wants them. You then only need to notch out the ECU case for the width of the cable...

That's a nice tidy job Ian.
Does that Sony phone have GPS?
There are Standard and a GPS layout options on the RS-AJP menu.

Do you think it would work with the Nexus 7 too (*I'm using one of these also)?

Looking at the Valarm site they seem to have one cable for Sony and another for Samsung but not sure if these are specific to the functionalities of those phones

Would be super handy to charge at the same time...

[Edit]

The Valarm cable is unique apparently and custom built to be the only cable that allows charging of the _phone_ and OTG at the same time

No other "Samsung compatible" OTG Y-cable currently available has been manufactured to this specification. You think the cable from Amazon or Newegg will work? Wrong. Ours is the only one that works, so save your money and get it here. Otherwise it won't work. smile

Farmyardpants, there is no way of knowing without trying it, the sony phone (and the samsung I think) are supposed to be put into dock mode by a 100kohm resistor in the plug as stated here https://sites.google.com/site/sonicboomworld/my-pr... I have seen a hint that the selection may be more complex and may require multiple pins to be manipulated.

I bought the correct resistors and solderable usb sockets but it didnt work, I then connected up a resistance box so i could change the resistance to within 1 ohm but all that happened was that at about 100kohnm the phone flipped from from charge mode to host mode without ever doing both at the same time. It did refresh my soldering skills though.

I just re read the valarm website and actually it is 64.9kohm for a samsung.

http://www.valarm.net/blog/external-sensors-chargi...

An easier way to make your own lead up is to use solderable plugs

http://www.hobbytronics.co.uk/usb-microb-plug-diy

Note that the resistor plug has to be the one in the side of the phone and not via an extension cable as standard cables only have 4 wires so the resistors won't then connect.

Aide I thought I'd tag you on this thread as I've just had a touch. My brother in law (an android user) has kindly given me his old handset... which just happens to be the later S3 so I'm buzzing. Seen the app in the store which I'll be getting (or adding to my Xmas list). Next to identify which ecu connection I need but I was hoping you would kindly show me what installation you went for with that phone and in a cerbera?

Great work mate.

Many thanks.

And on another note the above installation is topnotch!

I have an S3 permanently plumbed in and mounted on the dash.
The S3 needs this cable and here's video of it mounted
