A single speed camera in Nottinghamshire has caught almost 76,000 motorists in five years.
The camera, on the A610, has caught almost a third of the speeding drivers in the county and has resulted in £4.2m in fines.

The Specs "time-over-distance" cameras measures how long it takes to pass between two points on Nuthall Road.

Safety officers say accidents and the number of people injured on the road has halved in three years.

'Not cashing in'

Almost 280,000 motorists have been caught speeding in the county in the past five years - raising £60m in fines.

Alison Richards, from the county's safety camera partnership, said: "We're definitely not cashing in.

A60 Woodhouse Road, Mansfield

"We have to look at driver responsibility first of all. All drivers should know - because they've passed their test - that the road signs indicate that they're coming into a 30mph zone.

"So they should start to think about slowing down before they get to that 30mph speed limit.

"We judge if a speed camera is working by the reduction of casualties at a particular site.

"It is an absolute shame really that we're in the position where cameras are hated so much and that people are paranoid that more cameras are being put up," she said.

"If drivers slowed down and paid more attention on the road we wouldn't have this issue of casualties or collisions and therefore we wouldn't be looking at installing more cameras."

So how much have casualties reduced by then? Surely that's quite important? Glaring omission from the report I'd say!

Theiving ers!

"Safety officers say accidents and the number of people injured on the road has halved in three years."

This is the section of SPECs they named after a kid who was killed by a drunk driver who was speeding.

I live a mile or so away and they must only catch "tourists" as all the locals use the rat runs to avoid this stretch.

:bangshead: That'll teach me to skim read won't it! Still I'd quite like to know numbers Is it a dangerous route are we talking 2 deaths to 1 in 3 years or 200 to 100? The numbers mean more than "Halving"

Also - as mentioned above it may not have reduced the number of accidents, merely moved them to other places - driver training and proper policing is the only sure way of reducing accidents.

Ah yes - but that won't bring in 4 million quid will it!

Yes but why are they talking about accident reduction in the last three years when the tickets issued were over a five year period? My guess is that the accident figures over the five year period don't look good, but there is a natural glitch in the figures that makes the three year figure far more favourable.

Gold star to the man who spots the inconsistency!!!

As has been proven, most MoP DON'T spot the different numbers of years, which is why the government KEEP getting away with this crap!!!

Obviously sending out so many fines, this camera is doing a fantastic job of slowing people down.

NOT.

So it was not a speed per se accident.

Why will they not realise that the accident ist not caused by the speed issue - und drunk means ban! Thus - we are not making roads safer at all!

Und how many traffic cops do we see in Notts? Have relative (daughter of my eldest cousin ist at med school there) - und each time we visit her on his behalf - (he ist overseas) - we lots of scams but no traffic cops. Und the scams we see are all placed in lucrative spots. The dangoerosu bit ist the one we passed three miles up the road!

Ist typical!

So you want them to pay more attention, do you? Staring constantly at your speedometer helps you pay more attention to the road, doesn't it? Oh yes indeedy What a thoroughly well thought out argument you idiot.

What the idiots don't appreciate (or do they?) is that it's not the dangerous drivers that they are catching!

The fools, the utter fools! Alternatively: the money grubbing, cheating, twisting scumbags!

I'd also like to see the traffic levels for the time period concerned. The accident rates may well have fallen on this stretch of road, but part of that drop could be due to drivers simply using routes with no scameras on.

Eh?? She must be one very rich lady

What an assumption!!

Not by the number of people still speedin then? I thought that was why they were there. I must be doing somein wrong.

I think she's lost it totally now.

Perhaps not, she mentioned paying more attention

£4.2m, there's gotta be some law against that surely

Things that might contribute to a reduction in KSIs:

- lower absolute traffic levels
- different traffic patterns (eg. longer rush hour reducing peak levels)
- improved weather at key times of year (or even times of day)
- changes to road layouts/junctions
- fewer cyclists
- fewer pedestrians
- erection of barriers
- random fluctuations in "chance" events.

So could we be told of the causes of the KSIs over the years preceeding the Specs and the last 3 years, plus all the background regarding the above? Then we can make up our own minds about what the likely cause of the reductions is. I guess not, as that would be covered by the FOI act wouldn't it.

Surely if one kid died and accidents have halved it means since the introduction of SPECS someone was nearly killed

Yes, I know it's in bad taste, but so is fleecing the public to the tune of £4.2 million

£4.2m is much more than I will ever make in my lifetime.

Is this a money making SCAM or what ?

Apparently one of the comments by the Camera Pratnership's spokesperson was that a lot of people are caught on that bit of the A610 because they have just left the motorway (and a stretch of NSL dual carriageway) into the 30 limit.

If road safety was the paramount issue here then one of those speed-sensitive illuminating 'slow down' sign 50-100 yards inside the 30mph limit and before the cameras would be not go amiss. Will put this to said pratnership in an email and await their comedy reply!

Also that stretch as a lovely smooth tarmac surface until it's dark and raining. Then you have to try to pick out the lane markings and traffic islands, darkly-dressed pedestrians, etc through the maze of reflections caused by car headlamps going the other way! Mind you does slow you down!

Also odd that Scamera partnerships always report absolute data, rather than the obvious measure of accidents per mile driven, for example.

That camera is at that location to raise money as far as I can tell. well, they've proved that haven't they.

You leave the motorway and join a nice stretch of NSL dual carriageway then after negotiating quite a decent roundabout you go from a 60 limit straight into a 30. You expect the road to be a 40 limit as is the main ringroad but nope, it's a 30. Confusing isn't it.

Can we ask them for the true ksi figures.
