Having taken the decision to work for myself I've been advised that I must have some sort of web presence which obviously makes sense but the advice as to what exactly is quite varied, starting from a blog reaching up to a paid designed site.

I work offering Industrial Strategy and Operational Improvement Consultancy to companies, something that I've done for a while both as a consultant and as an employee so I'm not trying to actually make any hard sales from my website and I don't, to start with, need to make any financial transactions on the site which I hope simplifies things. I need to come across as competent and professional though.

I already have a simple blog with some content so the new site should incorporate this and one solution would be to just expand this gently and rebadge it to the company name but I would like to have company email addresses. I'm also not against paying someone a reasonable sum to set it up and design it if necessary but I am reasonably technically competent so this would really need to bring something extra to convince me.

I'd also appreciate hosting suggestions if someone has an opinion (unlikely as that might be on ph).

If it makes any difference I'm based in France but work anywhere.

Thanks, that's a fair point. I could keep up with the blog still and link that from my LinkedIn account. I'm still keen to have a company specific email address though rather than using a personal one and not sure about just get XYZco@gmail.com

Blog - too much like hard work.

Domain and a professional holding page with contact details.

Just buy the domain and have it forward to your LinkedIn page.

Alternatively - are you looking to set up under the guise and brand of a company? What do you plan to do long term? Are you always going to be just selling yourself as a service, or will you be selling a range of services and employ a number of consultants as a limited company? If the latter, you'll want to think about brand and websites now.

Personally I would spend on a short site fully explaining what you do and how to contact you, get it done professionally and it might just land the client of your dreams.
