At junction 4-5 there are roadworks in place and a 3 mile long 40mph zone enforced by lots of speed camera signs and even freshly painted speed camera markings on the road, yet there are no speed camera's there.

When the signs were first put up everyone seemed to adhere to the limit, but after two weeks people are now speeding up again.

I am wondering whether they are just relying on the signs to scare people into slowing down or whether they are waiting for drivers to become used to the fact there is no camera there before they sneak it in and catch everyone out?

Is it legal to put signs up to warn drivers of things that are not actually there?

How do you know they're not there? Keep an eye out on bridges and behind bushes.

AFAIK, a speed camera sign is just there to warn people that speed cameras CAN operate in that area - it may refer to a mobile camera zone!

Also, it may be that they've "plumbed" the area for cameras, and set up locations, but not yet installed the cameras.

But we are already aware that a speed camera can operate wherever the hell it wants, so putting signs up telling us where a speed camera 'is allowed' to be seems just like a further distraction at the very least.

I see it as a way of making us ignore the markings/signs so that we don't slow down when we see them, which is verging on entrapment.

Can't a speed camera sign be construed as 'demanding money with menaces'? I always consider them as more of a threat than a warning.

They'll probably install the cameras once they've got people comfortable with the fact that there's signs but no cameras.

Much bigger revenue take then!

I thought you could only display a speed scamera sign within 1 sq mile of a camera, or mobile scam zone?
