Taken from today's paper..

""Speed camera's 52mph error

A school bus driver with an exemplary record was "stunned" to get a summons after a speed camera recorded him racing through a village at 81mph.

However, Trevor Martin produced tachograph records to show he was travelling at 29mph. Mr Martin, 43, of Ipswich, was told no further action would be taken. The official explanation was that the speed camera in Earl Stonham, Suffolk, recorded vibrations on the bus.""

Any thoughts? (maybe he borowed someone else's chart eh?)

Yep vibrations on the bus are credible

The rear of a flat panel can vibrate through turbulence . The average speed probably was 29 mile/h but the panel vibrates towards and away from the camera subtracting and adding to that average speed.

The doppler shift in the reflections will give a range of speeds; the Gatso records the highest

So to beat the system we just need cars that have vibrating shells?

Time to remove exhausts me thinks

Hmm! time to stock up on womens battery assisted articles and gaffer tape. Soon as news break of this one the price may well go up as every gatso is adorned with one

I agree the vibrations are a credible source of the mistaken speed reading.Could this also happen with a car?

Nope, that'll play into their hands - you suddenly get a summons for 80 in a 30zone, and are looking at a prison stretch...except because your car doesn't have recording kit like the bus, you can't prove your innocence...and because you're a driver, it's guilty until proven innocent.

What you need is an RPG!!!

Most school bus drivers would be chuffed if they could get up to 80+ MPH in the first place.

Its a joke. How many people do we need to incorrectly / illegaly prosecute before we do something about this? How many people have paid up because of the threatening nature of the letters they receive (not realising their rights - which ARENT included in the letters). How much money is the government & SCP's making out us, the public?

Come on, when will it end? School bus caught doing 80+? What about that bloke with the Pug 406 who they attempted to prosecute for 406 MPH? Its school boy errors here and there is NOTHING to stop them carrying on regardless....

Its a bloody joke and may they all curse in hell...

P.S. Not having a good day...

Yes what you need is a Tacho as well as the vibration. Then you can prove your speed at the time of the "offence". (Unfortunately they will also be able to see the 140mph run you did down the M4 earlier.....)

I've had a Gatso flash me when under the speed limit. Probably caused by reflections from other vehicles.

Surely you don't need a tacho at all... isn't that what they white markings in the road are for (back-up evidence)?

I've had a gatso on the other side of a d-carriageway flash me before - I was the only car within 200yds, so must have been me. (The road bends slightly and is going up and down some little-towny-style hills)

So how does that work - as far as it was concerned, I was doing minus-50 in a 40mph limit!

This couldn't have been a gatso could it because they use the white lines to calculate speed. That means it must have been a manned camera where the operators decide if someone is speeding then use the cameras to corrobarate this decision.Surely it must have been blindingly obvious that the bus wasn't doing 80 odd mph.If it wasn't obvious then the operator could do with some extra training! (or am I missing the point?)

That's why I assumed a Gatso. Surely Plod would use their common sense on this one...

Maybe it was one of the new scamera vans that takes its pictures while it is on the move?

The school bus was doing 29 mph and the scammer was doing 50mph in the opposite direction

Not always plod in the van..hence the number of posts on here questioning the use of civvies for this. (What will happen when they give speed guns to the local "blue rinse" mob is beyond imagination )

Lots of speed equipment will be stolen / smashed up and the operator assaulted i would imagine.

I assume the scamera in question is a gatso (radar).

The scamera operators/partnership has proved that they are triply incompetent:

1) speed measurement of scamera was way out
2) Since when can buses travel at 81MPH?

..and last but not least

3) Corroborating photographic evidence was not checked
