I am coming up to 19,000 miles on my F10 M5, and the car is showing the rear brake pads will need replacing in 500 miles. I have a few questions relating to this:

1. What were you charged from a main dealer to have the rear pads replaced?
2. Would it affect the warranty if I got them replaced at an independent specialist?
3. Do you know of any independent M specialists in the South East that you would recommend?

Cheers.

CBS isn't that accurate when it comes to brakes - its only guessing the likely wear based on driver inputs. Mine is showing <2000 miles for the same but when I had rear tyres replaced yesterday I asked for the pad thickness to be checked and the dealer said they were only part worn and had plenty of life left.

Not sure where you are but PMW in Chelmsford are very good and will generally only use BMW parts unless you ask otherwise.

1. Are you mad (or very rich?) Main Dealer will charge you around £330-400 for supply & fit of rear pads.
2. No, consumables are not 'Service items' & unless above you should treat like tyres, thus get them don't away from a Main Dealer. Had my rear pads replaced with OEM Pagids for £100.
3. Sorry, i'm North West based so can't help with South East suggestions.

Yeah, I had read something similar on an older thread. Thanks.

Haha, no, I just wanted to be sure.

So, just so I am clear, you can get the pads replaced by an independent and they will reset the computer so that it shows they don't need replacing? And this item doesn't need to be recorded in any kind of servicing log?

I have just been looking around, and found this place http://berkshire-motorworks.co.uk/home/3788173 which is near me and has good reviews. Has any one used them?

I was quite surprised by their 'honesty' as I expected to hear "oh yes Sir, they need doing immediately, in fact the disks really ought to be done too" etc

Yes. If they're a BMW Indy then they'll have the correct computer to reset the CBS, but worth checking. The one i use certainly does. As long as you replace the pads with the OEM pads (you can buy them online from a Motor Factors or get the Indy to supply, IIRC the last time i bought online the rears were about £33 & the fronts about £130) then this has no effect on your warranty. Pads & Discs are no different in status as tyres & next to nobody would get a dealer to replace a cars tyres given the huge mark up they apply. Bear in mind a dealer will quote close to £900 to supply & fit a set of front pads & you can see the parts are only £130, so quite some mark up.
