Well, looks as if some sort of decision has been made and published. Thoughts and comments please guys. We certainly need it, but 2 questions. Should it be a tunnel instead of a bridge. Does it start and finish in desirable location. While I'm at it, considering that the M25 was the only one of the original proposed 3 motorways around London that got built, should we now be considering an outer M25 ?

I know it didn't make it to the final options but I was hoping it would cross from the A130 through Canvey Island with a upgraded A127 from the M25. It could have made the start of the outer ring road. London is well in need of a decent inner ring road too.

Anything we can do to make the tunnel more exciting?

By driving upside down maybe. This would increase capacity as well.

Tunnel won't be affected by the weather as much as a bridge so is a good idea.

The location will take a lot of traffic away from the current crossing which is a good thing.

Don't some vehicles have to have an escort in a tunnel, but not a bridge ?

That route'll make a BIG difference for stuff heading between the A1/East Angular and Dover.

I'm not far from Basildon so this works nicely for me.

I replied to the topic in the Kent&Essex forum, so I'll just copy paste my response...

"I'm in two minds about this. Glad that a new crossing is on the table, and a tunnel rather than a bridge. However looking at the plans, the preferred option is to link up directly with the end of the M2 at J1. I use this junction every morning and it's always heavily congested, from there all the way along the A2 top the M25. I hope this won't be compounded by extra traffic trying to cross the river at the new crossing.

Also, it's going to mean cutting a new link road straight through some lovely countryside around Shorne. Progress is good, but I hope it won't be at the expense of making the area too developed....selfishly driven I admit, as I live locally smile"

Hopefully the infrastructure investment will result in increased productivity. I wish we could have a similar but much smaller infrastructure investment in Bath to vastly improve traffic flow on the East side of the city (short A46-A36 link road over river and railway to stop through-traffic clogging up the already crowded city).

I hope so. One of my biggest concerns is that the M2 J1 (where it becomes the A2) is very heavily congested every morning, from there all the way to the M25. Hopefully it means a lot of lorry traffic can avoid this. But then I think most of the congestion on that stretch is caused by local commuter traffic joining from the three Gravesend junctions anyway.

why a tunnel? they aren't pretty, you can't see anything nice. With a bridge you can admire the view. The only positive of a tunnel would be if you had a loud exhaust.

Should dovetail nicely with "Boris Island" airport.

Always thought a tunnel, or a bridge East of the Dartford crossing, coming off the end of the (relatively) new bit of the A130 made some sense, in that it avoided many vehicles having to track miles down the A12 - A127 - A13 to reach the M25 and Dartford crossing, only to have then have to backtrack many miles down the M2 A2 (to reach the channel crossing points) at a point they could have got to directly if an outer Thames crossing had been available.
Bridges are more spectacular, but a tunnel is probably a bit more practical overall, but I don't know what the time to build / cost differences might be for either.

I think a tunnel would be preferable. If the weather is windy then IIRC high sided vehicles are not allowed on the existing M25 bridge. If this new crossing is a bridge then it will suffer the same problems.
