Speed limits set on the whim of residents' votes?
Discussion
As has been said before, take a sensible limit and lower it will not mean you adhere to the new restrictions, if you are going to go 10 mph over to the new level you may as well go 20 over. As the saying goes, "in for a penny, in for a pound' you find yourself travelling faster than when the limit was correct.

Ill have to take a road tonight (with bumps) due to the fact our bridge if out of action (and will be for another 11 months due to flood damage) and said bumps are awful. I will not go above the 20mph limit but i will only use 1st gear (car warmed up before hand) in protest....
They are awful bumps and i think i remember a bit of scraping last time, my car is standard! If this happens i think i may have to contact the nuggets in charge and see what they say.
If fear this is what will happen all over and only annoy the people living next to the bumps, as its only locals who go quickly and the local people who want bumps probably don't even drive....

I've said this time and time again. Generally speaking people want traffic slow past there house/village/area but the ability to travel at whatever speed they want once away from their areas. It’s the height of NIMBYism and when connected to local politics is obvious, Cllrs want to be voted in so will want to do what their residents want.
as above it's just a waste of money with some interfering t
ts feeling all pleased because they have something new to hop up and down about in "outrage".
Largely ignored by the general populous, somehow think the money would be better spent on other things (trident anyone

when training to be a plod, I spent a day with the roads policing unit, we set up on a residential road where a "NIMBY" had written to the chief complaining of people speeding along "HER" road......we nicked loads.....
If i remember correctly, she was about the 5th person we nicked.....I had a right big smile on my face as I handed out her ticket when she guiltily admitted it was her that had complained......
Some lowered speed limits are well out of order, driving around Portsmouth on some roads is becoming dangerous if you obey the 20 MPH limit, as locals over take you because they can't be bothered to obey the signs....I suspect this is very common everywhere.

This seems to be the case everywhere. People want only slow traffic past their houses and nobody to park there even if there are no yellow lines etc. But these same people will happily tear through the next street at whatever speed they want. The road past my place is 40mph and apart from the odd a
hole most people are sensible with their speed. One of the neighbours down the road is constantly moaning about "Speeders" and "Maniacs" passing her house. This of course is the same woman who went roaring past me with a lethal overtake as I was going through the next village which has narrow roads and a 30mph limit...
the village my dad lives in has a main road running through it and about ten years ago they embarked on a campaign to limit speeds, putting their own speed limit signs up, complaining constantly, standing by the road in hi-vis jackets with pretend radar guns etc.
Now there are speed humps everywhere so they got what they deserve (wrecked suspension). It's like the Maginot Line.

On my way home last night behind 2 cars, the middle one overtook the 1st in a 20mph limit, the lead car was doing 20-25.

Taking a new twist on this. I see a lot of publicity locally/nationally about 20 limits. But locally we have mothers unions with young children oit of control and limits reduced to 20 . That's the limit, I may not agree with it, but driving to the conditions, and with respect to my wallet and my car might mean that I want to drive a bit slower to save wear & tear, or it could be an area where toddlers play on the street. But there's always one who has no respect for their car or fails to know that there might be toddlers let loose, and gets upset if you stick to / drive slower than the 20 limit, and decides that trying to push car in front to go faster ( i.e talgate) is on. WHERE then is the enforcement to protect those wiling to respect the limit.

Local residents shouldn't be given that much power. They don't know well enough what speed limit is appropriate.
The local busybodies in my village lobbied the council to lower the limit through the village centre to 20mph. The council refused after doing some speed monitoring, saying as it was the main route through the village and over the river they wouldn't slow traffic flow that much. The monitoring on the 30mph roads leading out of the village gave an average speed of about 35mph (so the majority of drivers were speeding).
The council met the busybodies halfway, putting up a radar speed reminder and some advisory 20mph signs. The village council considered this a win and brought the council back to monitor speeds to prove their plan was working. Average speeds had risen at each monitored site, with the main road out of the village now having an average speed of 45mph in a 30mph zone! What an own goal!

There's no need to take any survey of residents' views.
Logic would suggest that the residents of a street are quite happy with the existing speed limits and the speed which traffic passes their house.
Although traffic volumes have increased, speeding is no more prevalent now than it was 10,20, 30 years ago, in fact because of congestion possibly less so.
If buyers/renters had been so unhappy with the speed of traffic when they bought/started-the -tenancy they'd have bought/rented elsewhere where it isn't such a problem.
ergo people have voted 'with their feet' , if they were unhappy they'd have moved.
