I have had a problem with my HDD which I have solved by re-instaslling Windows XP on my C partition. However, i forgot to save my e-mail from Outlook, but I expected to be able to use Outlook again as microsoft Office is on my D partition and so not affected by the Windows re0install....Except XP can't initiate Outlook after re-installing.

So, what happens to the e-mail? It hasn't disappeared off my HDD, so where is it?

Is it possible to retrieve it from the server?

Unless you've deliberately moved them, emails are stored in:

For Outlook Express:
C:Documents and Settings[username eg. nubbin]Local SettingsApplication DataIdentities{some hex looking number)MicrosoftOutlook Express

for Outlook:
C:Documents and Settings[username eg. nubbin]Local SettingsApplication DataMicrosoftOutlook

Not looking hopeful I'm afraid.

Yep, Luca is right. Doesn't matter which drive you install Office to, your email is always on the C drive by default.

Another way is to click on Inbox, then right click, then Properties and you can cut and paste the address into Explorer (without the inbox bit)

edited that's for OE

Get a copy of restorer2000. About £20 and it can usually get files back even after a format and reinstall. You can download a demo version first to check the files are still there before purchase. Already advised it and saved one PH'er this month.

NB, if it's full blown Outlook, not OE the file you want will end in .PST

Thanks - I am using Outlook - I'll try this tactic - for me 320 will be well worth it!

Nubbin, if you did NOT reformat your drive and simply did a re-install, your personal files folder should still be on your hard drive. Try doing a search for *.pst on your C drive if you are using Outlook in a NON MS Exchange environment. If you are running in an Exchange environment, just reconnect to the server...

Gaaah! I've managed to find an Outlook.pst file, but Outlook 2003 automatically blocks it when I try to open it, assuming it's a virus because of the .pst file extension!

Any ideas on how to open the file?

File> import and export.

Import from another program or file and off you go :-)

Don't know which version of Outlook you are using, but in 2003...

>Options>MailSetup>DataFiles

will allow you to manipulate data folders...
