Hello all.

I've just bought myself a laptop and fancy putting a couple of games on it.

I really liked red alert and see the latest (3?) will run with windows 10.

Also, I quite fancy Microsoft Flight Simulator. But this I understand won't run, although there is a steam edition, which might? - Also I don't have a joystick or similar. Would I be able to get on with just a keyboard & mouse?

Can any of you recommend anything similar to those two worth looking at?

Many thanks.

Specs of the laptop will depend on what would run so you might want to mention those.

Civ 5 is always a good bet, I'm not a fan of turn based stuff usually but it made me a convert and will run on most computers with even a mediocre turn of graphics ability.

Maybe something like Dawn of War 1/2 sale on team at the moment for all GW games.

http://store.steampowered.com/sale/games_workshop/

or maybe one of the total war series, i have spent ages on Empire: total war

http://store.steampowered.com/search/?snr=1_237_23...

Then there is always the classic "one more turn" games like Civ 5 and XCom

If it doesn't have a discrete GPU then you'll struggle to run much on it.

Stick on Minecraft while you're waiting. Cheap, runs on anything, addictive. Kinda like the software equivalent of an MX5.

It'll do fine as long as he selects things in its capability, I've got a laptop with a lesser integrated graphics along side an i7 and it'll do ok with things like RTS games and some proper 3D stuff providing you set the settings low.

The list at the bottom of this is a reasonable guide: http://www.notebookcheck.net/Intel-HD-Graphics-520...

Do you think it would struggle to run flight simulator x?

It depends on the resolution of the screen, the graphics fitted and what compromises you're prepared to accept. If it will only run smoothly at 1024x768 then if you have a 1920x1080 screen you're either going to have a small image with black border or you'll have to expand the image to fit the screen with the inevitable loss in quality.

Personally I wouldn't use a laptop for gaming unless it had at least a mid-level discrete GPU - my laptop has an Nvidia 9600M in it and at full HD it will only run old games, and then only on mains power.

How about World of Tanks, or World of Warships? Both free.

I just manage to run Warships on my lowly 7yr old Dell Studio 1555 with boggo integrated graphics.

Age of Mythology is a cracking RTS game, on special on Steam today for £5 something. I picked it up, hours of fun for not much moolah.

Red alert and flight sim? So you like building stuff, explosions and flying?

In that case you need Kerbal Space Program! It's more reliant on the processor (realistic physics) than the graphics, so it runs fine on my similar spec laptop.
You can download a free demo too https://kerbalspaceprogram.com/en/

I've hardly touched any other games for the last year or so. Spent last night designing a rover to move 18 tonne fuel tanks on the moon.

KSP is awesome.

Also try starcraft 2. But all the old command and conquer games (westwood era) are available free I think.

Also an xbox controller will plug straight into your pc, I just use a cheap one.

Microsoft FSX is very much a CPU dependant game rather than GPU of current games. You will run it on yours but might I suggest the previous FS9 (Flight Simulator 2004) instead. You will have no problems running that or in still getting scenery, aircraft addons both free and paid.

See for examples of freeware - http://simviation.com/1/browse-FS2004-31-0

FSX (modded with updated scenery, weather, clouds) can be made to look spectacular but it's a hard job to get it working properly.

FS9 - sorry about the abundance or airport and airliners but I still use it with WorldofAI as it can handle many AI aircraft at the same time better than my FSX which suffers slowdown with lots happening. This is almost default FS9 with basic modding.

As for the flying FS9 delivers everything FSX does.

Thanks for all your help.

I ended up with civ 5, which I'm slowly getting used to.

My friend had a copy of FSX which I'm using. Works ok just on a slightly reduced screen size.

I downloaded the Red Alert 3 demo on steam. But it isn't like the original I don't think, not too keen.
