Sorry if this has been covered before.

Just reading the division thread and noticed that several folks had pre-ordered the game even with Ubisofts somewhat sketchy recent past. Especially The Deus Ex baws recently.

There has been a bunch of game commentary on the youtubes and here seems to be a pretty good spread of gamers here.

I suppose the questions are.

Do you buy into preorders?

What have you preordered?

Why did you stump up the cash?

My answers are.

1, Not really. But I'm never saying never.

2, Not so much preordered, but I did the kickstarter for 'We happy few' to get the pre Alpha.

3, It looked like a really interesting game and didn't have a massive company bankrolling it.

I buy the odd pre-order.

I got Fallout 4 on Pre-Order because there was no way I wasn't going to be buying it...

Pre-orders for the pre-load usually, not any other reason

I pre-order games that people I play with are going to get and have pre-ordered. Sounds sheep-ish but I know, irrespective of the quality of the game, that I am going to get a good few hours play out of it.

Ultimately, gaming is cheap. £40 for, on average for me, 100+ hours gaming is nothing vis-à-vis cinema, night out etc.

I occasionally do, it depends on the game and if there are any additional bits for pre-ordering.

Occasionally you get stung with a shoddy release but it depends how excited you are in the brand or game.

Currently have XCOM 2 on pre order and will be pre ordering Warhammer: Total War as well.

Pre-orders made sense when you could only buy hard copies of games, it was quite likely that your local store would sell out. With digital downloads this is not as much of an issue.

These days it just seems to be a good way for publishers to boost day 1 sales figures.

I pre-order for my son sometimes when his mates are getting it on release day. You sometimes get the odd extra that mean more to him than me.

I'll only pre-order games I'm sure I'm going to love, NFS was the only one I did last year. Hopefully the big slew of releases this year will keep the promise. Detroit looks fun.

No, sometimes they offer a bit of extra content with a pre-order, but more often than no if you buy it off the shelf in the first few weeks it has the content anyway.

These days I download everything anyway.

I have only ever pre-ordered a few games - and have always been disappointed. BF3, BF4 (should have learnt my lesson), Starwars Battle front (really should have learnt my lesson) and the grand daddy of all bad pre-orders Aliens Colonial Marines......

If I ever pre-order again I'll post it up and you can all cancel your pre-orders as you know it will be a poor (though EA finally got BF3 and 4 working, the first couple of weeks were bad) ......(you can't blame me for the last Batman though) .

I used to pre-order sometimes when it was all physical copies, mostly for things like GT4 which I really wanted as early as possible, I think the last one was Deus Ex back in 2011, I probably could have got it on Steam but it was cheaper if I remember right.

The reasons I wouldn't ever consider pre-ordering now just wouldn't have crossed my mind, and a lot of those weren't really a problem then anyway. I'm not really bothered about having anything on lauch day now and prefer to wait until it's cheaper, though there's still the odd game I would buy at full price.

There were some better PC ports in 2015 and not so as many AAA launch debacles, but there's still some pretty egregious DLC practices; I'm sure it's encouraged publishers to do those things in some cases, I just don't see any reason to do it any more with digital copies, though I can see why consoles are a little different. Early access can/could have benefits, but goes with this for the most part also..

It's nearly as silly as pre-ordering digital music, which seems is a thing now too madbanghead

I rarely preorder games these days. I used to do it all the time, so I didn't have track their release. Amazon just took care of that for me, ahead of time. However, the last couple of years have seen some absolutely shocking missteps and some games released in hideously broken states. That was enough to convince me that pre-ordering was just a financial safety net to let developers get away with releasing half finished rubbish.

Now, I usually only preorder surefire winners like Dark Souls games, Halo etc etc. I still play as many games, just selected a little more carefully and played a little later so I don't need to have them on release day.

I find pre orders really silly - why would you want to commit your money to a game that hasn't even been reviewed yet. Considering the utterly shonky releases over the past few years on the newer consoles you would have to be mad to put money down.

Is peoples desire to have a game the day its release so strong that they are willing to chance £40 on it being broken rubbish? I tend to leave it a few weeks so I can checkout the metacritic reviews. It seems the games review industry has disappeared up the backside of the games publishers so everything gets a 10 score and amazing reviews. Its only when the general public get their hands on it that you see that everything is not so rosy.

Like wise paying for season passes is also moronic - here take my money for content you might / might not produce of totally unknown quality. Its almost like people want to give their money away.

I noticed that the Division Beta is based on you pre ordering (and committing to buy) the game. So now we have developers using the Beta test as some sort of incentive to buy a game.

The audience has some blame for this, look how much pissing and moaning there is when a game is delayed.

The last game I pre-ordered for myself was BO2 and I learned my lesson. I loved BO and MW3 so just assumed BO2 would be great. Now I let my mates son buy the games and give me a few goes to see if it's something I'd want to buy.

i never preorder and have always managed to buy on release day. After all are Tesco, Sainsbury etc really going to risk running out of stock of the latest must-have game just to create "demand"? Doubtful!
It's the same for new movie release to dvd, "Quick everyone pre order Spectre on blue ray because we've only got a few in stock!" Unlikely Mr Tesco.

The only benefit I can see is the additional content offered for some release day versions of games.

AS above. Battlefront was my most recent and I was drawn in by the Beta but the game is as buggy as usual for EA and it has no legs so I'm bored already.

How many times did people want a sequel for Duke Nukem? it took decades. When it finally came out it turned out to be incredibly st. the series is now ruined as a result. people (idiots, kids, and those with mental problems) whinge about everything.

I'd be much happier waiting for a game to be done well then for it to be rushed out, buying it, and noticing tons of incomplete features in a game. I want it polished when it comes out, not have to play something half baked and wait for 6 months of patches/changes before its up to scratch.

I got involved with Project CARS early on (it was called pre-alpha and tbh it was fascinating to watch the game develop), mainly because I was into racing sims/driving games in a big way and partly because it offered not only a copy of the game but a share in returns...and I'm glad I did.

Other than that I don't pre-order because...Steam Sales! Wait 6 months and even the good games go for 50% off.

I will do it if there is a game I can see myself getting and theres an opportunity getting into the pre-alpha testing. Most of the time you get massive discounts on the game. For example ARMA 3 cost me £14 and I got to play with the stuff as it was developed.

Tempted to pre-order Warhammer Total War but part of me just thinks to wait until CDkeys has it for £20.
