Having decided to change the bushes on my 1995 Chim I was surprised to learn that you can't get the original bushes for a GKN diff.

Tvr parts say that I have to change the two plates either side of the diff to modified ones that can accommodate larger BTR bushes.

Does anyone sell poly bushes for this diff or do I not have a choice and will need to also get these mounting plates.

If I understood correctly the top bush is the same on both diffs so is not an issue.

Top bush is the same. Side ones are smaller. Simply trim to fit.

By machining them you mean they are the same diameter but longer? I can buy standard metalelastic bushes for the front brackets and get them cut down?

Yes the side bracket one's are longer but the same diameter top bush should be fine to clarify.

I took the propshaft off and the crown toothed wheel has stayed on the diff. Does this tap off as it seems stuck on.

Once this is off and I undo the bolts holding the diff to the front brackets, is there anything I need to know about the speed sensor as I am worried about taking it off wrong and buggering up the speedo reading when putting it back on.

It seems to be on a bracket that is fixed to the top two bolts.

The only thing that holds the toothed ring on is the 4 propshaft bolts.Tap it free but dont bend any teeth.
Just unbolt the bracket that holds the speedo sensor.
Avoid unscrewing the sensor out of its bracket if possible. It does however need to be re checked when you put it back on that none of the teeth hit it when the prop is turned.

The toothed wheel comes off although it may be a bit stuck with grime.
When I put mine back I got it as close as possible without touching and it worked fine.
Just watch out as the connector on mine was on the inside of the car and is too big to go through the cable hole.

I tried sticking a screwdriver behind it and lightly tapping it off but it wouldn't budge.

I'll have another go tomorrow. The hex bolts holding the diff to the brackets look like they are welded on with rust so fun and games due in getting those off.

Its probably just stuck. As you can see its just the prop bolts holding it on.

Just a tip. You mention the hex bolts. I assume you mean the 4 that go through the diff mount brackets. The head is a M10 cap head bolt then the nuts are either a 17mm or 19 mm spanner size. Just be aware that the diff also has a thread in it for the bolt and the nuts are only there to lock the bolt. So best way is to release the nuts off first then wind the bolt out of the diff.
Hope that didnt confuse you.

jazzdude, did you sort the side diff bushes.

The top ones are all the same as previously stated so no problem there apart from getting the original one out hehe

I had the same problem with mine, in that the bushes are too long for the side mounts. I cut mine in half and removed a certain amount from each side, cant remember how much about a cm or so. Then pressed each side in so they were a perfect fit. Been 4 years now and they havent moved.

After i had done mine i was told that David Gerald TVR stocked the correct size ones so maybe they are worth a call.

Yes I did the same.Sorry out of focus photo. But I cut them in half and took an extra slice out to make them fit.

Thanks for letting me know about those Allen bolts, hate the damn things.

So you are saying that the key size is 10mm?

I spoke to everyone re those shorter bushes and Racetech came up trumps. They found the mould for the shorter ones and are getting some more made up, should have them next week.

Just working out what the best way to drop the diff now on my own with a trolley jack. Doeable without killing myself?

Yes I think I used 10mm allen key/socket with a small extension. I took mine out on my own using a jack and many many new swear words. When I put it back I wrapped the chassis rails with rags to stop it scratching the new paint. Seemed to work OK but its very heavy and you cant get more than 1 person in there whilst you are up on axle stands anyway.

It's the twisting and maneuvering I am worried about while I'm lying underneath it.

Definitely 10mm, you could also protect the chassis with pipe lagging
