Pistonheads was recommended to me as a reliable source to purchase my retirement classic car,all went well ,contacted the seller, came to a deal,transferred the funds then shock horror !!!!!!!!!!!??????? I've been done. My dreams are now shattered , why do you allow this - all relevant institutions regarding fraud etc have been contacted. Pistonheads in my eyes really take the PISS - as well as my hard earned cash !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! many thanks for wasting my time and hard earned money
Why on earth would you transfer a large sum of money for a car you have never seen to a person you have never met?
Best bet, contact the police and work with pistonheads who may be able to give you an ip address, etc.

Well with Easter being early it is close but probably not close enoughOP - seriously one question whats the normal market value of your "retirement classic" and what was the value of the one that you got scammed on
If the two values are close to comparable I'll have a very small amount of sympathy
If the two values are miles apart then there is a well known expression been used for centuries

Ultimately, we have to rely on the judgement of our users to spot the scams that get through our filters, which tend to be easily identified by their ludicrously low prices, 'spec list' style descriptions and suspicious stories from sellers about the vehicle being abroad yet somehow still registered in the UK.
We have banned that seller permanently from our site. To pursue the matter further, you can get helpful advice from the Police's website for vehicle fraud, at www.vstag.co.uk. You should also log this incident with Action Fraud, where it can be tracked - http://www.actionfraud.police.uk/
Due to Data Protection laws we cannot release any details to you, but we can and will cooperate fully with any Police, Trading Standards or private legal enquiry into this matter, and will release all of the information that we have to any of those bodies. Remember to give them the reference of the advert, or the car registration so we can disclose the information.

Anyone one of those "factors" should be enough to set alarm bells ringingGreed is generally the factor that the scammers feed/rely on
by "greed" I mean the buyer takes the viewpoint "I'm getting a bargain too good to miss and I can't lose - if I look at other cars with similar spec and mileage I'd be paying double" Once someone does that the reasonable thought process goes out the window - along with the money which is lost as a result
Are you sure data protection laws prevent you releasing info where fraudulent behaviour has taken place and a transaction has been entered into by the two parties.
Surely data protection only prevents release of info between non connected parties
Banning them seems to be a strange approach if you want to be able to make contact with them
As for the OP ( assuming all this is unfortunately true) my sympathies
