So, my friend just ripped half his finger off..(no pics)

Ok, so this is very much one of those "Cool story, Bro" affairs, but I had to share..


He caught it in some lifting ramps which left it with the knuckle split in two and poking out and the rest of the finger an unrecognisable, swinging, pulpy mess. However, he is one of those people that just doesn't seem to care about pain or injury. I have seen him miss a small ended chisel with a club hammer, for example, hit his hand, blood pour out and him just carry on hitting it anyway. There wasn't even the briefest of pauses until the job was done. I'm talking full-on swings, too. I could say the same about some of his welding burns..

Tonight he just said he had chopped his finger off and he drove himself to the hospital via a petrol station to get regular cigarettes because he could no longer roll his own. Apparently the guy in the garage asked if he was ok seeing as he was standing there with blood soaked tissues wrapped around his 'stump' and he just laughed and said "Do I look ok?" He even called us to ask how we were getting on with removing an engine he had been helping with.

He was then seen at the hospital, was taken to a specialist unit, was bandaged up and despite him asking if they could just cut the rest off as he has work on Monday, he was told he has to come back tomorrow at ten before they make a decision over whether it can be saved. After this, as you do, he went home via the kebab shop where he ordered up a nice Doner.

All our concerns over him going in to shock and passing out due to blood loss etc and offering to drive / get an ambulance were just wasted.

I have seen the pics and it's really not very nice - the Doner looks lovely mind you.

Sounds like an incredibly high pain threshold.....I bit my nail to the quick before and had to hold back the tears!

Some people feel pain in different ways I reckon. I hit 2 of my fingers with an angle grinder a few years ago & cut them quite deep (to the bone). I was up a scaffold at the time and figured I'd finish what I was doing before heading down & bandaging them up with kitchen roll and insulation tape. Never bothered going to hospital as (a) it didn't hurt, and (b) they weren't falling off. Still got the scars today (although I've told my son they were from a shark bite).

As a kid I fell out of a tree & snapped a collarbone. Didn't mention it to the parents for a couple of weeks as I thought I'd get bked for being up the tree in the first place. Had to have it rebroken to get it in the right place. That smarted a bit, but I did get Jet Set Willy as a "get well" present which more than made up for it.

I do wonder sometimes if my pain sensors (or whatever) don't work properly

Tell your mate there are other clumsy fkers out there & hope he's ok!

I broke 3 fingers at rugby yesterday in the first half

got subbed with 10mins to go when could not bind properly in the scrum

When I broke my finger late last year, I thought having it splinted up and then having to do physio was a real hassle and I did for a moment consider asking if they could just cut it off below the break to save fking about, so I could get on and play tennis, climb, go to the gym etc.

When I broke a finger, the bone shattered into 4 like an X. Interesting to look at on screen, but apparently my suggesting of just popping a splint on for a few days until it set itself was not amusing to the Dr...... I now have rather a lot of metal in that hand....

Yup.... And the best part is there is so much metal you can see the bump of a screw head sticking up..........I will at some stage get a copy of the X-Ray of the fixed bone.

How can you get an X-ray of it? I want someone to X-ray my fixed finger. I've tried staring at it in front of a lightbulb.
