Not been to either for a while, but The Running Horses always used to be the nicer IMO.
(Was going to also suggest Bryce's in Oxted. Also not been there in a while - looks to have shut down unfortunately).
Careful on the A24 - speed cameras (handhelds etc).
Thanks for the heads up (Was going to also suggest Bryce's in Oxted. Also not been there in a while - looks to have shut down unfortunately).

Running Horses all the way. It's expensive, but consistently good.
I lived on Box Hill since 2008 until May 2015 and have tried all the local eateries, many times. This is the one I go back to time and again.
Another thought is the Smith & Western at the top. This place varies wildly depending on which minimum wage grill monkey is on shift on the day, but certain things such as the (excellent) ribs and hot wings are impossible to f--k up. Ask for the lunch menu as this probably won't be on the table.

At risk of being ostrichized, I think the Running Horses has gone downhill as a pub since the change of ownership. The new owners did keep one of the chefs, so if the food is the main thing, fair enough, and the restaurant area feels more special than most pubs.
The William IV was recommended to me for its steaks, well it was good, but just a good steak, not fantastic. The room itself was not great, certainly not improving the experience in any way. The garden is very nice.
I would probably drive a few miles south for a proper country pub with decent pub food at the Surrey Oaks in Newdigate, or choose a restaurant like the nice one in Reigate.
Haven't been to the Plough in Coldharbour for ages, sounds like I should try again... has it still got a brewery? Or am I getting confused?

Did last time I was there. My favourites around there were the Langton at Friday Street and the Parrot at Forrest Green. Went to the Parrot for years in the seventies when Gary Brooker owned it.
