Do you think the recipient would appreciate a £50 - £100 bottle of wine, I'd suggest using the budget for a case/half case of something decent.

Agree with this.
How can you possibly have formed a view on what someone who you know nothing about will appreciate?

Maybe a top grade Chateauneuf-de-Pape such as Ch. Beaucastel They drink well young but can be cellared if the recipient has proper storage facilities.

Maybe that was why I was asking him what he thinks.

Let's not let the actual words you typed get in the way though wink

A rhetorical question, given that you followed it up with this piece of advice:

Rather than let the thread descend into a typical PH squabble lets just ask the OP and move on biggrin

OP - definitely one exceptional bottle rather than a few good ones?

Hi

Yes i think one exceptional bottle rather than a case, its not someone i know personally very well but a surgeon who fixed my knee, i asked his sectary and she said he likes a red wine so i thought id get him a nice bottle as a little thank you.

Walking into his office with a case wouldn't feel quite right where as a single bottle that he probably wouldn't usually buy i think would work well.

Thanks again

Would they drink it? As a red wine drinker id prefer 6 bottles of half decent stuff than one costing £100.

I know a few orthopaedic surgeons and not one of them would appreciate a £100 bottle of wine - they are all pissheads who love drinking
smile

Make of that what you will.

Another vote for Châteauneuf-du-Pape, something like this - http://www.bbr.com/products-23984-2012-chateauneuf...

Either the Chateauneuf-de-Pape or something special from the New World such as https://www.majestic.co.uk/Cheval-des-Andes-zid400...

I'd suggest a Bordeaux - a second growth wine from one of the Premier Cru houses, from a good year. The 2000 or 2005 Ch Bahans Haut Brion would be a good bet. Available from Fine & Rare Wines (no doubt others too).

For that sort of money you could also consider a good vintage champagne or a Sauternes.

Claret, for heaven's sake. Pauillac. Pichon Baron or Comtesse de Lalande. £100 should get you something decent (but not stellar).

This is the correct answer. Most orthopods are pretty affluent and will recognise and appreciate a decent claret. Nice gesture for you to make but please remember just a card with a few words is appreciated more than you might think.
