GT3 bodyshell same as carrera 4?
Discussion
According to Wikipedia:
The GT3 was based on the standard 996 Carrera, but was stripped of a great deal of equipment for weight savings, featured stiffer, adjustable suspension and upgraded brakes, and used the bodyshell of the four-wheel-drive version, which incorporated additional front-end stiffening.
Is that true?

Sort of. It is not stiffer in driving terms, but it is based on the same shell.
Racing regulations prevent fuel tanks being placed forward of the front axle. In order to provide space for a larger capacity fuel tank, the C4 shell front end was used. Due to the location of the front diff, the C4 uses a different shaped fuel tank hence the smaller trunk space. The standard C2 shape tank and the diff occupy the same location. Part of the front firewall is essentially moved forward in the C4 reducing trunk capacity and creating a void behind for the tank.
Using this layout in the GT3 allowed a tank to be used that combined the shape of the regular C2 tank with that of the C4. There is no diff to get in the way of the C2 tank part and capacity can be increased.
The large tank is only available for the LHD cars, so RHD cars see no benefit from the change.
