Hi there.

I'm looking for a very simple book-keeping app to keep track of income and expenditure relating to a couple of overseas properties.

I'd like something that can handle transactions in more than one currency, and can be setup for quick and easy transaction input.

I don't need any sort of VAT, balance sheet or bank account handling. I'm only looking to record cash income and expenditure. Simple reporting needs to support my tax returns only.

In my distant past I was an accountant so should be fine with underlying concepts etc. I have been doing this in Excel, but surely there's a better way!

In an ideal world it would be an iCloud enabled app accessible from my Mac at home and my iPad/iPhone when away.

If someone could point me in the right direction I'd be enormously grateful! Thank you in advance.

I haven't checked to see if it does what you want, but have you looked at Xero?

I love Xero, but suspect it will be overkill for the OP's needs, and multi currency is only on their top tier package, so £300/yr

Thanks - I'll look at Xero.

I looked at Abacus, but it doesn't seem to support multi-currency.

Does Quicken/Quickbooks/Quickwhatever still exist I wonder..?

I was hoping not to have to do my own research!

You actually don't want an "accounts" package as such. All you want is a simple summary of income and expenditure - something Excel can easily handle.

Virtually all the book-keeping and accounting packages that exist work on the assumption that proper double entry/profit and loss account and balance sheet records will be required.

For rental properties, this will not normally be the case (unless you are actually running a property owning and management company of some sort).

Do you want to run ledger accounts?

Well - I do have quite a volume of transactions (from multiple sources) to record in multiple currencies. I think I'd benefit from the ease of input, categorisation and reporting offered by an accounting package even if I'm only using a small part of its capabilities.

Quickbooks Essentials looks like one option for £10/month. Research ongoing....

Give Xero a trial, it's free for a period - be sure to try out the bank reconciliation, it's very well designed
