This just came up on my youtube recommendations - a review for the new BMW 7 Series.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=X98C1CopnFU

It's filmed as a 'selfie', and the bloke starts off showing us the front of the car, and then notices he's hit a bird with it so goes in for a nice close up of the remains whilst claiming that the active radiator grille must have chopped it in half 'or sumfing'.

Then we get a look at the key 'this button opens the boot, this one unlocks it, and this one, ummm... probably sets off the alarm or sumfing'. He presses it - nothing happens.

I gave up at that point, but honestly, how do these people get invited (at some expense for the manufacturer no doubt) on a press launch, and how on earth does this stuff get three quarters of a million views in three months!?

Most of his videos get far fewer views, I presume this one was so successful due to the interest in the new 7 series at the time it came out.

Maybe lots of folk saw the TV ads, were interested by the fancy features, and wanted to know more.

My son has a YouTube channel with about 70 videos.

One of his videos has over 1m views and the whole channel has had about 3m views. That's generated about nearly 2k in revenue for him.

I have no idea why as its just simple stuff like pivot animation and or reviews!

I dont get all the 'unboxing' videos. Who in their right mind takes the time to watch someone else unbox a brand new kettle?

Let's hope he's a little better-informed and whatnot on the new show...

Some of the boxing stuff can be quite good if you want to see the product, its size in normal surrounding, what connection and features it has. I bought a digital video camera because of one as I could actually see the footage it shot.

Some of them are lame thou, it takes them 20mins to even open the box and they don't even show you anything useful.

Thankfully, they will have someone to help with the script, someone to operate cameras / sound and editing before it goes out. There should be an uplift in quality from a self-film, off the cuff style chat about gizmos in a car - one would hope...

I've just watched it all and I've seen a few other videos with him in, granted the selfie camera style isn't great but he's doing it on his own.
The videos where he has a crew helping he's quite funny and "fresh", he appears to be very comfortable in front of the camera too and more likable than chris evans.
I'm looking forward to seeing him on Top Gear!

Seriously, he sounds alright. I'd rather listen to him than Jezza saying "Who'd like to see this random celeb try a hot lap?"

Quite, infact I'm surprised they didnt find room for Shami Chakrabarti or perhaps Dianne Abbott or maybe even the odious woman from Brake, to ensure we get a balanced show for the professionally offended smash

You should try reading the car reviews by Ben Griffin on their website without cringing. I just looked the Tesla Model S and the Bentley Flying Spur V8S reviews - absolutely shocking!
