2001 vw beetle

I've a 2001 new beetle 1600 petrol, with a broken engine. Its a AYD type and i know they have a very limited life, so i don't want to replace it with another thats already done thousands of miles. The BLF engine fitted to later models looks to be a much stronger unit. Will it fit mine? can any one advise?
