There is an article in a sunday paper saying that people are applying a ladies cosmetic to there car number plates and the substance makes the flash from the cameras bounce off giving an un readable image, anybody know which cosmetic this might be.

Its a load of cock. Besides, any cars behind you will see a similar effect in their headlamps. And you can bet that any police car that sees such an effect will pull you straight over....

Oh yes...!

Only two nights ago I was following a white RS Turbo, on a dual carriageway, and from directly behind his number plate was completely unreadable. It was just after sunset, so not pitch black, but I had my headlights on. There appeared to be short pieces of black tape all over the plate.

As I drew level, the plate became readable, but only at a tight angle. At this angle it became apparent that it wasn't tape, but some kind of optical effect caused by the reflection of my headlights off the plate. (The overall effect was like the "dazzle" style of camouflage used on battleships during the war, if you're familiar with that.)

I've no idea what caused it, but I have no doubt that a Gatso flash photo (if taken in the dark at least) would be completely unreadable.

Absolutely - the car stuck out like a sore thumb.
