fuel tank

Hi all, Just became a member of the exclusive chim club and it feels great. But i have a little problem there is a smell of petrol when the tank is full.Is it easy to take the tank out and renew the hoses as i dont think the tank is leaking.

Is it the boot that smells strongly?

Its in the boot and in the passenger side mainly.

I bought my Chimaera on the 3rd October last year and have (touch wood) had my petrol problem finally sorted only a fortnight ago. Here's my story; Driving the car back from collecting it I pulled over to wait for my wife to catch up after we exited the motorway. As soon as I stopped the smell started pouring through those 2 vents in the panel between the cabin and the boot. It was truly awful. I can smell it now to this day how bad it was. I was almost sick once I arrived home with my new pride and joy. I had to keep it quiet from the wife as she would have killed me as I had problems with my previous car after just buying it too. An FTO for my sins. Anyway, why didn't I detect this when I viewed you may ask. Because the previous owner new of the problem and left the roof off and kept the fuel level very low. It was only when I filled up I noticed the problem. Anyway...I took it straight to the garage and they checked the carbon can in the passenger wing and all was fine. He said that the valve in the vapour recycling pipe was the wrong way round. 3 days later in the garage again. This time, replacement fuel pipes from the tank. Then replacement pipes again as the others corroded. Then more pipe replacement. Then he took the tank out and the union at the bottom had corroded too so he replaced that which has seemed to have sorted it. More in post below as ive ran out of characters.

Continued....Luckily the guy who did it for me didn't charge me after the first visit so it hasn't been an expensive trip other than the inconvenience of it all. After the first visit, on the way back I had a woman lose control and run in the side of me. Really hit me hard but didn't actually do any damage other than badly scratching my alloys and paintwork. This fibreglass is remarkably strong you know. So it was off the road for quite a time while the insurance was being sorted.
Anyway, hope the above may help somewhat as I know how awful it is and how it got me down.
Let me now any outcome.

ps. taking the tank out is easy, carpet has to be reglued though. Wouldn't recommend it myself but depending where you are located it might be worth you using the same guy I used.

Thanks fez 1974 great help I live in the north east. Who is the best guy to take it too up here??
I might have a go myself when i get a bit more confidence.

Mine had a leak on the fuel tank sender where someone had used too long bolts and bent the tank. Took apart and cleaned and repaired with some liquid metal stuff, now good as new..
