111R Brake problems, and Lotus response!!
Discussion
I have had the crossdrill holes on the discs all fill with brake powder and they are all totally blocked. I didn't feel this appropriate fro 2500miles and having never had a car do this before I spoke to Lotus, and Dealer etc. Apparently they all block easily and my dealer is spending loads on unbloaking. While unbloaking this will solve it temporarily it doesn't address a miss match of brake type to pad compound.
Anyhow having received a standard, you are the only one to winge, the brakes are fine and blocked holes will no degrade performance (yeh right) I'm wondering whether anyone else has eyperienced this or got anywhere with Lotus, I'm thinking I'll need to put green stuff or something in which doesn't produce as much dust. I just narks me Lotus won't yet admit it's not right.
Anyhow anyone experienced this or had more favourable response from Lotus etc.

Hmmn that famed Lotus response - TADTS.
Have you contacted Lotus customer services dept direct with your prob? - found this has been my best route in the past and they have generally delivered the goods. BTW don't fit the green stuff get Mintex 1144s -and good luck
- did you get your car from PSS? - always found Daniel pretty good at sorting probs....

The response I talk about is the Lotus Factory Customer Services...I'll give them another ring after I get some more info to back myself up. In my eyes if they fit crossdrilled discs it is for better gasses release under heavy braking, if they are blocked they won't work so they therefore will not work as well.
Doesanyone know what happens if I cane the brakes with blocked cross drills is the main effect overheated brakes due to dificultiy with the hot gas release. ie Glased pads with them crumbling earlt and needing replacement.
Problem is as a consumable item they are difficult to argue. I will not be replacing with std Lotus pads whatever.

Standard pads do throw out a lot of dust (got so sick of trying to keep the wheels silver that i eventually got them powdercoated black)
Never saw the holes blocked though (can't be that hard to clear though??) Personally i wouldn't worry about it too much -the disks main ventilation is between the rotors & not all disks are x-drilled anyway.
If nothing else you're half-way to the dimpled ebc style disk already

boggy said:Probably just surface rust? Does it sounds graunchy too? 10 minutes sounds like a long time though! A quick way to clean them up is to drive with a foot on the brakes & throttle. Obviously don't practice this in town!
Just to touch on this note, I get quite a lot of brake fade after I've left the car standing or washed the wheel's thoroughly, I end up having to pump the brakes for the first 10 min's of driving a little dangerous I think ?
The purpose of all of the patterns is to get rid of brake dust. The bigger pad surface causes more dust than standard and the hotter the pads get the more they wear and in turn the more dust they generate. The purpose of cross drilled, grooved or combi discs is to sweep away this dust to ensure more friction between the pad surface and the disc. Cross drilling the discs is the most effective way of getting rid of brake dust, however they are much more prone to cracking. Grooved discs are also very effective at removing brake dust but are much less likely to crack. This makes them much more suited to harsh use.
Accroding to David King who worked on the DB9 "Grooving is more efficient than cross drilling. The pads are kept cleaner and work more effectively. Also, brake pad dust can block cross-drilled discs, which reduces braking performance. "

I thought the cross-drills were for extra cooling via increased surface area. And therefore won't cool down properly if this extra surface area is covered. Main thing I would be worried about is I can imagine dust unblocking out of some holes by itself and then warping the discs under heavy use and uneven cooling.
