Rover gauge connection

I have bought a rover gauge cable to check my water temp amongst other things, I guess the connector it plugs into is the 5 pin white one with only 3 pins used near the ecu, but as you can see from the picture below one of the pins is in use and loops around to the back of the connector to the pin with the white cable, basically shorting them together


So I have the white and black cables shorted together, is this normal and can I just pull the cable out from the front?

Here is a picture of the back of the connector, the black wire at the front is the one now seen looping around from the bottom in grey

That looks like the correct connection.
It has a loopback terminator plugged in at the moment.

Unplug the end bit and it should become clear. You RoverGauge cable will plug into the bit with the three (four if you count the two black ones independently) wires going into it. On mine there are only three pins in the plug so if it is the same on yours don't worry.

You don't have to have the loopback connector plugged in for the engine to run (mine has not had one since I have had the car).
Remember to disable the immobiliser before trying to establish communications.

What you have there is the connector with its mating half plugged together.
The black wire is to earth the signal wire so it does not pick up stray interference.

Unplug it and plug in the rovergauge lead.

When you are done plug the two parts of your connector back together.

Hi guys, so what I'm looking at is actually 2 halves of a connector and I just need to separate then and then connect.
