Hi guys.

Thinking ahead a little to when the weather is warmer and I have my car back and my thoughts turn to the desire to get on the track. Not having a decibel meter to hand I was wondering if anyone knows how many decibels a 640 bhp carb sbc with standard factory exhaust produces and which tracks I can take it on if any?

The tracks I have researched thus far seem to be between 101 and 105db.

I am based in SW London.

You can get an app for your iPhone that's a dab meter.

So did anyone take their car on a track day last year? If so which one and what were the noise restrictions?

Have a look on Javelin Trackdays website - that gives you the db limits at each track for the trackdays they run.

Not sure this will help too much as my car is an LS7 which may be slightly quieter than yours.

I have done a couple of 105db days at Silverstone through Goldtrack and not had a problem. There were some Ultimas with SBC set ups on both occasions.

I would like to find out the actual noise too as there are some other tracks that are a little bit lower with their limits.

I would suggest anything under 100db might be unlikely though.

Get the phone app as suggested, or if you want something a little more accurate (but still not 100%), maplins sell db meters for about £20.

Drove Zolder wich has a 95dB-limit several times with a SBC-car and never had any issues.

Very few here in the US use a static, all on track and a lot will depend on the particular track, where the sound meter is located etc. Knowing where it is you can let off the gas a little or it's common to see 90 degree turn downs on the end of the exhaust pointing away from the sound meter. The crux is it's really hard to judge where you are until you get out there, but I have no problem passing a 103dB limit.

I did 2 static tests, my 6.3 SBC is 114db with 2 std silencers and 99db with a custom (albeit restrictive) 3rd box
