Identify Wedge 2.8i Air Box?
Discussion
Can anyone identify from the pics the air box I have in my 2.8i please? I thought it was perhaps Granada but a filter from that certainly doesn't fit. It sits very close to the power steering pulley/engine so can't be that efficient breathing warm air. Again I'm wondering is it a item that "Wesley" collected over the years? Any thoughts please, thankyou. J C.

Hi John....The PAS pump on D was on the O/S...I think your air box was originally..(Possibly) the same at one point....I have a good Ford Capri PAS pump that actually fits that side...And the bracket if needed...In fact will be needed.
The only other way would be to do what i did...

And then run a cold air feed from a K&N in the nosecone.

You can just see it in this pic...

Thanks Zig. Fitting the psp on the other side might throw up more problems, remember the saga of the alternator now mounted on the offside? Wouldn't cutting a hole that near to the metering plate cause prblems? The only way to go I guess, a Capri air box certainly doesn't fit. Cheers J C.
Original fitment into wedge is a Granada 2.8i airbox. (Mk 2, the squarish Cortina look alike one) Your photo has the top of the cover missing, and replaced with the foam and wire mesh.
The original airbox fouls the power steering pump in the wedge , which is why TVR put the pump on the other side (original alternator side) and moved the alternator up.
Zig's pics of his mods, show a Ford Capri 2.8i airbox, or the top of it at least, Ford had the same problem (pump fouls) in the smaller Capri engine bay.
Here is a pic of my original airbox with my home made deflector at front to stop hot air coming in from radiator. My wedge does not have P steering.
Zig posted pics showing PS pump on other side in an older thread somewhere....

John,
Just so there's no confusion, Zig's 2nd pic is the TVR mod, so that is standard layout for all 2.8 Power steering setups. (given that 'standard' and TVR don't really go together). It's not a 'Zig Special'.
I think Zig said somewhere the pump on his was an Austin Montego (?) or something.
I've moved alternators around before - it's just about making sure the pulleys line up, and you've got some adjustment etc.
Hole near metering unit will be OK, remember it's a long way from engine, so flow will be fairly smooth by then.
The trick really is making/getting a smaller box to fit the fuel distributor assembly.
May find a Capri one, or you could get a shop to make a box (or DIY if you're that way inclined) and then fit a cone style air filter....
Fuel dist is flat and has an ordinary paper gasket where it bolts to the box, so not too bad to make one out of a folded ally sheet. I was going to do that myself, but found a real cheap K+N filter for original box, so I kept it.

Thanks Andy.I tried a Capri air box from Tickover but no way it was going to fit without major alteration. So the way forward is to molest my set up by blanking the large square exsisting intake and cutting a hole in the front of the box beneath the air distributor plate. Then a ducting forward. Because of the block mountings and strange power steering input shaft my alternator sits quite high up on the offside. At least the pulleys line up and there's adjustment. Another day in the life of TVR modifications?
Cheers J C.

When attempting to supercharge Delilah the alternator was moved from the O/S to the N/S...We had to form a bracket but the holes on the block were already there...Just like the two positions for the power steering...Which incidentally was used for the new alternator...However i went the EPS route as there was no room for a pump and the alternator as the charger was a big ole lump...
Here is a pic of the capri pump..Pre- Charged
I only did this initially down to the lack of space on number one plug...I always managed to loose skin when taking the plug out which was more than normal in the early days!

Post Charged.

Alternator re-positioning.

Thanks Zig, what nice engine bay.
I to have a problem accessing No 1 plug due to the adjacent modified alternator bracket. Easier swinging the alternator out of the way. I will resolve the air intake configuration in slow time, in fact maybe a next winter project if "Wesley" is on the road this summer??
Thanks again for the detailed pics' Cheers John C.

Yes Zig, lots of room if you haven't got the Power steering pump there. No problem a hole in the front of the existing air box is the way forward with ducting down to the nose. Cheers J C.
Hi John..Just make sure its equal to 3" as that was the minimum for the metering unit....Not sure if your metering unit has the same mount...I think we nicked my one from a Sierra 2.8i...Ill see if i can find the original post...Cheers...ZigaGassing Station | Wedges | Top of Page | What's New | My Stuff
