My refurbed gearbox is due back tomorrow so can anyone recommend gearbox oil please - brand, spec, volume, synthetic or mineral etc?

Cheers,

Max

Definitely not ATF! It was put in my 'box after the refurb in 2010 and it had to be changed PDQ. I know I have a different 'box to you, but the semi-synthetic gear oil I put in made a huge difference.

Castrol Syntrans Multivehicle 75W-90 Car Gearbox Oil. Makes for a really silky smooth gear change

Never, ever use ATF!

Paul - have you come across this stuff? It's supposed to be the mut's nuts for the LT77.

Mobil make good synthetic gear oils, quite possibly the same as some of the stuff in other bottles!

Also it doesn't smell to bad when you get covered in it ;-)

Just make sure you get the right viscosity. I can make you a Automatic Kinematic Viscometer to test it with if you like but they are about 8k for the basic one I think!

Thanks Gregg - think I'll just go for the recommended 75w90

If we're talking about oil for the type9 g-box go for 75-90, and make sure its GL4. Comma do one.

Hi Max,
I drained my gearbox prior to Spa last year and it was thin red stuff which I took to be ATF, so I replenished it with Dexron II ATF. Researching the interweb showed an even split between two camps for the Ford Type 9 gearbox, either ATF or 75w90 semi-synthetic or fully synthetic.

BillC99 said that Castrol SMX oil was adopted by Ford for the Sierra Type 9 boxes after complaints of baulky gear changes. This was thinner than normal and red in colour, so this is most likely what I drained out of Austin. Having said that, the ATF I put in has caused no problems, performing well under all conditions.

Castrol SMX-S has now been superseded by Syntrans fully synthetic, so I would recommend this or an equivalent. The capacity should be 1.9 litres.

75w90 semi-synthetic is fine in Type 9 and LT77 smile

ATF is the factory-spec, but it's not good oil. It's only specced because it stops gearshifts from being a bit reluctant while its cold. In terms of lubrication, manual gear oil is far superior.

That's very diplomatic of you. In the context of the LT77, it's no better than dog pcensored It's meant for automatic 'boxes and that's where it belongs (IMHO).

But it's your car, so it's your choice thumbup
