Just a quick recommendation for this title, if you were unaware of it or had passed over it.

I went into it not expecting a great deal since it doesn't come with the addenda of the 'great' titles we often enjoy these days. I know it has been available on the PC for some time and came to the PSN store and Xbox Live at the end of last year. You can also get a disc based copy for your console for about £20, which is what I did.

So, if you can see past the scrappy graphics you will find the best post apocalyptic RPG of the generation. Forget about the disappointing Fallout 4. Indeed, there isn't a Fallout game in existence which can match Wasteland 2. It's essentially a squad based RPG very much reminiscent of the very best 'tabletop' style RPG games. Wasteland actually precedes the first Fallout game, but if you can imagine Fallout 1 or 2 being released today this is what they might look like.

It's deeply satisfying to play. Whilst it's not open world, it follows a linear story but gives you a meaningful freedom in how you want to progress that story both in terms of which areas you visit and how you handle the problems there. There is a deep combat system which is reminiscent of XCOM. The story is engaging, and many of the quests are particularly well written and inventive. It's also pretty long. I'd say 80 hrs for a reasonably in depth run through (although many quests have multiple endings with achievements attached so you cannot see everything in one run. It's a game that is absolutely stuffed with character and detail, so if you're into games that demand attention and reward you throughout you'll probably find much to like with this one.

The first fallout was originally intended to be a Wasteland sequel but the dev team couldn't get the rights to the name.

I bought it on a PSN sale. Not had much chance to get into it yet but it definitely looks interesting.

I really like the tone of Wasteland. I've played the first two Fallout games and it's definitely closer to them than it is to Fallout from 3 onwards, but it doesn't have that goofy 1950's visual aesthetic which is really starting to wear thin in Fallout. Wasteland 2 is full of Easter eggs and references, there are a few nods to Fallout too. I really can't stress how deeply it is rammed with detail. One of my criticisms of Fallout 4 was that it was huge but so bland and so characterless, with so little to actually see and do in the wastes. Everywhere in Wasteland 2 has flavour text, side quests, characters etc etc.

I'd be tempted to say when you do get into it, pore over every detail but keep the pace going. It's a big game and it doesn't all just take place in Arizona. Always keep a balanced set of skills with you too, as there are skill checks everywhere and they often have considerable impact on the game and how you can play it.

Was playing this last year in the lead up to Fallout 4, which I think is why Fallout felt so shallow to me.

I had just reached the second area and was suddenly getting my arse handed to me when Fallout launched, have now ended up on Divinity: Original Sin (which is excellent aswell, in the same tabletop RPG style, but with magic) but will definitely go back to this soon
