S6 V10 Hand Holding
Discussion
Chaps,
After years of sensible diesels, mostly Audis, I am in a position to buy something crazy. Top of the list is this:
http://www.autotrader.co.uk/classified/advert/2016...
I am slightly worried about spending £13K on a car like this and need some encouragement. Few questions I have is:
1) Timing - is a chain? Do I have to look out for any rattles etc on start?
2) The above car has had 5 owners, is that a bad sign? The dealer said that's common for cars like that but then he would say that.
3) Servicing - the stamps for that car are 18k, 28k, 37k, 41k, 56. Looks like it started on long life and then has been done every 12m/10K. Seems to be due a service now. Will that be a major service?
4) Anything else to look for?
5) Is the inlet manifold flaps thing common and anything to look out for with that?
6) I am guessing 66K on this engine is not a problem at all
I know the service and running costs are going to be higher than my TDIe but I dont want to stung. Mostly because I will get a large dose of "I told you so" from the wife.

I very nearly bought one about 4 years ago and did quite a bit of research.
100k is nothing for these engines but they do need an occasional de-coke. This can be done for about £300 by an Indie.
They are generally really reliable and by far the biggest running cost will be fuel.
They sound the nuts and with a Miltek exhaust sound like a slightly subdued F1 car. Women will hear the car and want to bear your children!
Prices are now moving down at the speed of rock erosion.
I didn't buy in the end as I split up with my wife the day after putting down the deposit (no connection!) and always regretted it. In Sept last year I got a BiTDi and that has pretty much satisfied my cravings. If I had a £15k budget and was looking for something to do 10-15k miles a year, a V10 S6 would be right up there.

Petrol doesn't bother me too much. My commute now is 12 miles a day so will probably only be doing about 5K per year. We have a Nissan Qasquai for weekend family duties so this will be my work horse with the occasional (probably regular) weekend hoon.
The wife will never let me shell out on a Miltek so will have to make do with the stock exhaust.

I think reliability wise the C6 S6s are pretty solid. The demand for these cars can't be that great though, so bargain hard with the seller and ask him to put it through an official Audi Service as part of the sale package. He'll probably balk at the idea, but if he's telling you it's a lovely car blah blah blah, then what has he got to fear from it?! The wife will never let me shell out on a Miltek so will have to make do with the stock exhaust.

Also, if you're only looking for a car to hoon in and do very short commutes - are you sure you want an S6? You can pick up a 996 shape 911 for this sort of money and it will be a much more fun driving experience.
Get it bought lad!
I've had two in the past. A 56 plate saloon which I had for over two years which had over 100,000 miles on as it left me and an 07 avant with over 120,000 miles when it left me. Big, lazy, uncomplicated petrol engines with no turbo's or DPF's to worry about.
The engines are noisy and sound a bit unbalanced on initial startup. Should settle within a minute if cold. I had a problem with the manifold flaps on the avant. It had a sticky spindle or something like that. My mechanic friend fashioned a new spindle and it was all good. With a car on 66k, I wouldn't worry about coking. Just look out for the usual stuff as with any car.
265/35/19 tyres can still be had from Tyre Leader with the official Audi AO rating for £90 delivered. All other consumables can be had from Euro or TPS.
Audi fixed priced servicing is still good value even though the prices have gone up. £255 for interim and £585 for a major. Sounds a lot but the major includes replacement of all 10 platinum spark plugs.
The car is close to me in Manchester so if you fancy a second pair of eyes, let me know

i had the same recently until i went ahead with a purchase just before xmas for a car with similar miles in avant form
ive spent just shy of a grand getting new rubber put on and some bits sorted at mrc... it needs new pads and discs but theres plenty of places to get genuine audi parts at reasonable prices
mine is on the avs regime but it will be moved to time and distance for the next service
they are pretty specced up but can be enhanced with a range of interesting factory options so be sure to cross check the options
if you go in with your eyes open esp re the running costs like the fuel and tax which bother some people then its not an expensive car relative to the what you get in the way of bang for buck

Nice one!
What's the full spec? If you type the option codes from the sticker in the front of the handbook into the site below, it will tell you all the options that are fitted:

I will have to check when I get it. Looked like just a loose cable. It was access via the Media section, Aux input Cd11 or something.
I have an old iPOD lying around so no bother if its just for that
As above, sounds like an aftermarket job.I have an old iPOD lying around so no bother if its just for that
The way to be sure is if there's a CD Player sized space next to (on the same level) as the CD changer in the glovebox, then it's an aftermarket job, if that space has a module sitting in it, it's the OEM Audi AMI unit that interfaces the iPod with the car's entertainment system (display's track names, can use steering wheel controls to change track, etc).

Ah ok. I suspect it wont provide power to the unit, in that case its a bit useless as the ipod I have has a knackered battery and only works when connected to something providing power. Looks like though retrofitting the AMI to the 2G is quite easy and only a couple of hundred quid for the bits.
My current A6 is a facelift and has the 3G with the SD card slots. Although lets be honest for the first 6 months I will be driving around with the window down listening to the engine
