Bombardier to cut more than 1,000 jobs in NI.

The aerospace firm Bombardier has said it will cut more than 1,000 jobs from its Northern Ireland operation.

The company said that 580 jobs will go this year with up to 500 more next year. That is equivalent to around 20% of its workforce in Northern Ireland.

It also announced that 270 jobs are to go at its trains business, UK for Rail, which employs 3,500 people at several sites.

Never mind, the government is delighted that Aldi is opening lots of new stores, so lots of shelf stackers wanted. As long as the employment figures go up, job done.

Just terrible. 380 of the initial 580 are temporary staff and the balance 'core'.

The C series has hurt them badly which is really sad - it's a lovely plane, and I'd imagine it would sell, but the orders just aren't there to support development.

Sad news, as above they make some wonderful aircraft, in a previous life, we were one of the 1st people to operate their Global Express, great things. Hope those affected find new jobs soon.

Sad news I am sure but it's funny how some of these get reported and others don't. I used to work for one of the biggest suppliers to the OEMs. Over the past couple of years they have let go, closed plants etc with numbers that probably total more than the Bombardier figures reported.
