A5 - Anything I should know?
Discussion
Thinking of changing cars. Thought a change would be nice but wanted to stay German. Like the look of the A5s and generally think they look like a safe bet? Was considering a 12/13 Diesel, manual, 2ltr. Probably the black edition. Don't really need anything particularly fast, and mpg and road tax are appealing.
Anything I should be considering? I say this, as when I bought the 320d, people were immediately telling me the engine was chocolate and I should have gone for a petrol of a 330. Thanks.

Well I picked up a Black edition Quattro t'other day. Looks great and generally pleased. Couple of things though, I find the road noise (at over 50mph) surprisingly loud, especially compared to my 3series. I'm guessing it's partly due to the whopping bloody great big wheels. I'm not overly fussed about having such big wheels...is it possible to swap for smaller, say 18's? Would that make any difference?
Also, from research, it looks like you can add sat nav via the multimedia thing. Is that right?

If it does not have factory navigation then retrofitting is a big, expensive job. Alpine do a setup specifically for these that is well featured but not quite as neatly integrated as the factory kit (cheaper, though).
18s will fit fine but do keep the 19s; will be murder to sell without them.
Road noise can be down to tyres; I'm in a Q5 on 20s and just switched from Mich Pilot Sport to Goodyear efficient grip; they are markedly quieter.

Ta. Prob won't bother with the sat nav then. Was only interested if it was only a couple of hundred quid and a quick job. 18s will fit fine but do keep the 19s; will be murder to sell without them.

It's got Pirellis on at the mo, so may consider something quieter when I change. Thanks.

I've got a black edition and the 19" wheels are a tad noisy. I've got 17" winter wheels on at the moment and they are so much quieter. I do miss how the car looks on the 19s though, I can't wait to swap them back! I've had my A5 for coming up to 4 years, it's a 12 reg and I've had no issues with it so far (touch wood). Also, from research, it looks like you can add sat nav via the multimedia thing. I like the look of your 17"s better
I guess I'll just never understand this. I get to see the outside of my car for about 1 minute every day, but I'm driving it for an hour. What it looks like from the outside just isn't important to me. Each to his own, I suppose

I'll just suck it up I think. The type of road surface seems to be as much of an issue as anything.

Make sure you are comfortable with seats, I found the bog standard seats really uncomfortable and if you will have rear passengers check the amount of legroom in the back.
Very much agreed with this first point. I'm currently driving a courtesy car 15 plate 2.0 Diesel Quattro A5 Sportback and the seats are incredibly uncomfortable in comparison to the sports seats in my S5.
I just cannot get them adjusted properly and the leather feels like vinyl.

My 5 year old moans more about the leg room in the back than my 10 year old!
I must be lucky they don't moan now in the back of the A1! but then its maybe only a couple of times a week we are all in the car together. Gassing Station | Audi, Seat, Skoda & VW | Top of Page | What's New | My Stuff
