Hi,

I need to check why my speedo has stopped working, any advice on removal procedure / tips for the dash to get at the speedo gratefully received.

Simple stuff first, remove steering surround drop the steering wheel and column and by various means and good torch you should then be able to see if the cable is attached to the back of the instrument. I have managed to get my hand in there and make sure it is screwed in correctly. The instrument rarely fails but they can if suffering from constant misting and condensation. if all ok then go to the other end (gearbox) and make sure that all is attached correctly they do have a habit of working loose. The other common issue is that due to no lubrication of the cable or wear they can seize and strip the nylon gear wheel at the gearbox end. Removal and examination will confirm. While it is off you could attach a electric drill to the cable end and run it and check for instrument indication. Finally the cable can seize and break the cable in the sheath in which case its a cable out job and send to "Not so" Speedy Cables for a refurbishment.

Thanks Jack,

Had a quick look at the cable gearbox end while the car was on a ramp this morning having the brake fluid pressure filled. All looked OK from the outside and I am nice and hard now.

Used Speedy cables about 15 years ago for a speedo cable replacement for my 1935 car. They were quite speedy then, guess older age catches up with us all in the end wink

If you have access to a ramp then I would pull the cable and its gear wheel off and test for free movement in the cable as well as trying an electric drill on it while someone watch the instrument as this will eliminate a lot of areas. 4-6 weeks seems to be "speedy" at the moment!

David Gerald had them in stock but sold to TVR Parts who now have them. £19.95 + VAT for TVR-CC member and all in stock. Very speedy! Part number TVR 035N 001A

Think my current speedo cable is a bit short frown



To drop the steering column do you remove the bracket holding it to the bottom of the instrument console.
