from the Gov previous MoT website I found this

I know the speedo would not have been working as he had not fitted the correct wiring (MT75 'box) but hoe can he have fitted new outriggers OVERNIGHT - then suddenly revert to severe rust within a couple of months when I purchased the remains after he had crashed it and sold it on ebay with an MoT.

This is what I found when lifting the body

New outriggers and other parts

I reckon that he fixed the headlight and perhaps the door and took it to a 'friendly' MOT place the next day. It shows that it is good advice that you need to look at a car before buying rather than relying on paperwork. In your case Mick you have more than enough skills to inspect a car but some guys may be misled.

Ever so slightly a teeny weeny bit suspicious Mick. confused

Has the VIN plate been tampered with in any way? ( Assuming it has one. Austin never did, but that's TVR on a Friday afternoon.)

Was the retest done at the same MOT station?

Always a good idea to do due diligence checks on ANY car before parting with your hard-earned. You'd be surprised how many have a bad history. I mean any car, not specifically TVRs.

The gov. MOT history check only goes back a few years, but is a useful indicator of recent history. Always supplement this with an HPI check or similar and if in doubt, walk away. There's always another car......

I did read something in a magazine about the reasons for widening the availability of the MOT info, but I had forgotten all about it until these posts. I seem to remember one of the issues was to make MOT testing 'more transparent' and to make garages more accountable. We all know of dodgy practice and what is, in effect, corruption. If we want MOT's to be fair and consistent then issues like the one raised by Mick do need to be reported to the DVLA, they have the references from which they can identify the garage. It could become similar to other systems where date eventually establishes a pattern and the DVLA can concentrate on the rogues rather than spot checking all MOT stations. That would be in all our interests.

Since I became aware of the info (thanks Steve clap) I have begun checking all the cars in the family. So far nothing sinister has emerged except for the dreadfully low mileage I managed in the S over a particular period!!!

it was an ebay purchase - me in Teesside and the car in Essex

however I did check on Pistonheads about the car / owner and was told it was good

and that it had passed an MoT

it certainly looked good with an expensive (over £3k) paint job and new rear roof and refurbished targa panels along with nice wheels - ALL for SHOW.

This is the first TVR I have owned / looked at etc.

Still - I learnt a lot during the rebuild rolleyes

But it will be the same old story, ie "insufficient resources".

As you can see, my car failed at the first attempt last year because the o/s headlamp was 1/4" out. That's right, a 1/4"

If the tester hadn't jammed the handbrake on, I wouldn't have had a chance to twiddle the screw and get a pass without a return visit.

Of the 10 cars that passed me on the way to the shops earlier, 8 had only a single headlight working. So just how many dodgy MOT's are there out there?

Not worth the paper they are written on! soapbox

PS does anyone know where the "tact" is on an 'S'?

Richard,
Just imagine how you'd feel if you found out we had the same Dad yikes

As it happens, my Dad was a Londoner.

1/4" at the headlamp can be quite a few feet at the end of the projected beam Joe.

Interesting to note that the MoT Test Numbers at the same testing station on the same day are completely different.

Tact is when you deal with French people Maurice. wink

as long as the 'Tact' is 'in' and not 'out' I believe it should be ok

me and some mates are collecting fibreglass cars....here and there we buy some new toys ....we do this since around 10 years.

NONE...i repeat NONE of the cars we bought in the last 10years shouldnt have passed the test.

severe, instantly visible / recognizeable faults....even on rather good cars.

for me such dodgy mots arent new, nor surprising.

I agree if you take the time /opportunity to visit and inspect........if only I could have....... however it is now in reasonable condition
