What's the thinking behind Grigio Titanio Ferrari, Rolls Royce Ice Green, Rolls Royce RO, Toro Red?

Why name your colours after a competitor, and why does the competitor allow that?

Ferrari is not part of the colour name.
You have probably seen it written 'Grigio Titanio - Ferrari'.
The colour title being Grigio Titanio, with Ferrari the (presumably original) user of that colour.

Clearly the competitor does allow the use of their colours.
Whether anyone can retain the right to a particular colour, I do not know.
The extra cost for other manufacturer's colours on an Aston Martin is quite considerable, so I wonder if part of that is possibly a royalty to the other firm.

Can somebody "own" a colour?

It's a genuine question.

Ferrari probably don't own the grey, but they do own their name. What I am most curious about though isn't why Ferrari allow it, it's why when you can call your grey and blue and green anything you like, why pick those names? It's not to satisfy customer demand, because the number of cars in those colours is very small.

Because that is the name of that colour and exact composition and the manufacturer is just prepared to apply it to customers cars by request. They will have their own grey and green too.
